[ - ] We, on a major budget, will be visiting NYC for the weekend of the 4th with our 14/15 month old.. We plan on being in Manhattan for most of the 4th and 5th, but are staying in Jersey.. Where are the best spots in the city to attend to 14/15 month old needs, e.g. quiet places to hang for 1-2 hour naps; restaurants that won't freak with cheerio droppings and occasional screams; places with comfortable, clean changing rooms -- NY mothers, what are your secrets for long days out with baby in Manhattan (& Brooklyn too..) Thanks. 19 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

i agree with pps. nyc is very child friendly. if you're concerned about restaurants, just look for one with other children in it. you will find many, many, many that are fine with kids. new yorkers traditionally eat out more with their children than in any other city i have visited. comfortable clean changing rooms are another matter. space is very tight here, so even the most well-meaning places might not have this. but you can go into buybuybaby or babiesrus or toysrus. it just depends where you will be. (OP:) Thanks folks so far for the responses.. We will be planning in the following week, but the answer so far to "where" is "everywhere/don't know"... I would like to hit the Strand, wife craves Golden Unicorn, I think we both have eyes on the Museum of Natural History.. We won't hit everything on our wishlist in two days, nor should we try to with a 14/15 month old, so.. your suggestions will certainly inform our itinerary -- did I say thanks yet? 4th grade test scores are a factor in public middle school admissions. 5th grade tests scores determine if a child is eligible to take the test for Hunter High School, which begins in 7th grade. a child must score in the top 90%, I believe. In my understanding, private schools do not look at the standardized test scores for middle school admission. They require tests from the ERB (either CTPs or ISEEs). [ Reply | More ]

there are only two places to take the ERB -- your preschool (if 15 or more kids are taking it the ERB office will send a tester to the school) or at the ERB office which is on East 42nd Street. The test is offered year round. Your child must be 4 years old to take it for kindergarten admissions and take it the same year applying. The testing year begins in April. [ Reply | More ]

it really depends on what you mean by "high needs" and from where these characteristics originate. i mean, it's a db's job to be "high needs" and "demanding" since they are completely dependent. if you mean fussy and highly reactive in temperament, that's one thing. if you mean extremely alert and engaged, that's another. etc. [ Reply | More ]

^^ my dd is also intense, "demanding" and wanted to be held all the time. she is also extremely good natured (whew). people always ask if she is "easy" - which would NOT be the word I would use to describe her. she is exhausting AND amazing. she started talking at 7.5 m/o and was using complex, compound sentences at 2 y/o. she is now 2.9 y/o and more exhausting and amazing than ever. so, to answer you original question, it actually gets somewhat harder as they get into toddlerhood/preschool age. ^^ people ask if she is "easy" because of her good-nature, in case that's not clear. it's hard for many to comprehend how challenging it is to have a child who is FULLY PRESENT 110% of the time. I think the playdate and DS's personality (very curious but a bit active) more than his birthday were why some schools said yes and others Waitlisted. That's what our PSD mentioned too - that now schools were saying that May birthday kids were a little young. So officially, it's definitely not too young, but it's starting to get tough even for May. (Completely ridiculous IMHO) [ Reply | More ]

Interesting. Are there May kids being placed in younger grades or is it just getting tough to place May kids? [ Reply | More ]

Given that there are not enough spots to go around, they will continue to give preference to older children. The bigger the supply/demand imbalance, the more the unofficial cutoff will get pushed forward. It is very frustrating....... [ Reply | More ]

Intersting. I wonder what they'd do with a May 30 ds. It sounds like the line is a little blurred. [ Reply | More ]

When you say that your early June boy was considered a summer birthday, how was that expressed? Through PSD or did you receive actual "too young" letters? I understood no boys received "too young" letters this year. TIA [ Reply | More ]
