[ - ] i want to be zoned into a particular school in bklyn. our neighborhood school is decent, but the one I want my ds to attend is great. we may rent an apartment in the area, but what is the process for being considered zoned to a school? how long before applying shall we rent a place? and would we have to maintain an apt throughout elementary school, or could we just do it for X number of months and then 'move'? thanks. 43 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You have to actually live in the freaking apt. The entitlement is just amazing. If you have so much freaking money, really move to the zone. [ Reply | More ]

It's not crap but you do have to actually live there - if you don't and they find out (and I hear they actually do investigate sometimes) you will be booted out. We have friends who rented an apartment in the zone they wanted and moved there for a year and a half - sublet their co-op - and then moved back, and it worked. [ Reply | More ]

we do. problem is that a lot of kids from our nabe attend private schools, and those who attend public are different. i am not sure about how difficult it will be for my child to fit in when most of the kids can't afford the classes/clothing/etc. i know that it's shallow, but i would rather he be around other kids in a similar situation. Under the rules, if you reside in the catchment for one year (and that year has to be after the kindergarten year, I guess because K is not mandatory), your dc can stay at that school even if you move. [ Reply | More ]

The thing you should consider is how great your decent zoned school would be if involved parents like you didn't pull their kids out. That's how 261 went from being the crummy Cobble Hill school to one that is coveted and having its own problems from overcrowding. [ Reply | More ]

It makes her a bad person if she decides to commit fraud to get her kid a spot in another school. If she's willing to actually move to the zone for a while, that's a whole different situation - but cheating is wrong. [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't take that many people to be proactive, just a little effort. There are lots of things that can be done, and I'm sure that even the parents who seem too busy, would help if they were given specific things to do. Thats what is working with our school. [ Reply | More ]

The thing is, if you do this, with the overcrowding happening in the good schools, you are not guaranteed a spot. If the school is over capacitated, then they could send your dc to next nearest school. So keep this in mind. And as far as staying where you are, if you say your current zoned school is decent, a little investment with time and energy can do wonders. [ Reply | More ]

My MIL lives in subsidized housing and has to be in the apt at least once every 30 days to maintain residency (spends a lot of time in hospitals and being cared for by different family.) [ Reply | More ]

Continuing, the residence is legal if a parent lives there. Simply maintain a different residence for each parents. I believe that as long as that parent is days there at least one night, with less than 30 days between, you are totally legal. I'd maintain a log of every night, and move some mail, driver's license, etc. [ Reply | More ]

This came up in my family because a couple separated. But not legally. He just moved out til they worked it out or got divorced. As you can imagine, there was some back and forth on living arrangements that lasted years til legal separation (still no divorce, he still has keys and spends a lot of time at his wife's place, kinda crazy). Anyway, that was perfectly acceptable to the school district. [ Reply | More ]

Just move to the new zone. Your kid will want neighborhood playdates and you'll find yourself making friends there. If you try and maintain two places, your kid will be confused and will feel like an outsider. You can always move back later. And yes, they do check in many popular schools so you can't just 'rent' a place for the address. You would also have to tell your kid to lie when asked where he lives and do you really want to teach him to do that? [ Reply | More ]

There are a lot of high fives and a lot of splashing and half the time the kids aren't paying attention -- and the instructions don't do anything to try to get them engaged. I wouldn't harp on the fact that he's not contacting you as much. I would start out by asking what he is looking for in a relationship. let the conversation go from there. I would do it in person because it is easier to infer what they mean by body language. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] So this is for the moms applying to preschools. Just came from lunch with five close friends, all of them are natives and not a single one put their dcs in a popular or TT preschool. All of them were considered legacies or alums at the so-called TT preschools but they sent to neighborhood schools. All of those dcs are now in TT private. Why? They said that not going to a known school made their dc more appealing. Take it for its worth but I find it interesting. Good luck! 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

BTDT mom and ITA. It is very hard for a family with the first child going through a TT preschool to do well getting into a TT ongoing as there are always many siblings and legacies in the class. [ Reply | More ]

the question is, are they legacies at ongoing schools? If so, no advantage to a "tt" preschool at all. [ Reply | More ]

that's their theory, though. Nobody knows what exactly it takes to get your child into whatever ongoing you prefer. Not going to a "TT" preschool might or might not work. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. Only go to a TT preschool if you truly like it more than a preschool that is convenient. Don't choose it because of exmissions because no one really know how it will go. It depends on the year, the child, your relationship to the school, etc., none of which you can predict or control. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I have an older dc, and now a new baby. Baby is 3 months, so we're still in the thick of it. I've done this before, so WHY do I feel like we will be stuck in baby-phase forever?? Why don't I have the perspective that baby will also grow up and outgrow the crying and sleep issues? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
