[ - ] I'm expecting my first child in August. Planning to bf. Is the single or double pump best for when I return to work? Anyone have difficulty switching back and forth between breast and bottle? I was told not to introduce the bottle as it confuses db, but don't understand how I could not if I'm returning back to work. TIA 34 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Get the double pump, saves so much time. And ignore people who say no bottle. If you don't introduce a bottle after getting settled into BFing, you are setting yourself up to fail when you get back to work (baby will reject the bottle). Meeting with a LC is a good idea too. [ Reply | More ]

I second the advice on the bottle. Not only introduce it, but start pumping early and have DH give a daily bottle. My DB refused a bottle and now 13 months later I am thanking g-d a she likes her sippy cup, because I am spent. [ Reply | More ]

I second this. Also get the Easy Expression bustier for hands free pumping. We introduced a bottle at 4 weeks (I had 12 weeks leave) and it's been fine. Our ped. told us that as long as the nursing mom is not the one giving the bottle it's fine. Babies are not stupid, they will eat. [ Reply | More ]

It holds the flanges in place. A regular nursing bra just exposes your breast for a baby to feed from. [ Reply | More ]

no, this is a bra that you wear while pumping that holds the cones to your breasts. this frees up hands to read or whatever while pumping as opposed to holding cones with your hands. you will still need regular nursing bras for regular time (btw, I loved the nursing tanks from target-i still wear them to bed though I haven't nursed in 6 mos). i introduced bottles with both my kdis when they were under a wk old, it was fine. what may be helpful is to either get a lactation consultant or go to a bf support group (i went to realbirth)-they can help you get most out of your pumpnig and help you figure otu schedule for pumping and est a supply. as for pump, I got a medela pis, regular not advanced. does your office have a pumping room or do you have space to pump? my office had a pumping room with a lactina so I did not have to schlep the pump back and forth to office [ Reply | More ]

fwiw, I only found the bf stuff useful after I'd had the db, not before. I guess I needed more context, like a dc. gl-it is hard but doable. I bf both my kids to 14 mos and woh ft with both of them. and Ita on giving the bottle from day one-may want to get a few different types to try out and see what works for your db. [ Reply | More ]

My ped had told me to give db one bottle a week to get her used to it. With that advice, I did the same with ds, and it worked well for us. I actually gave one bottle a day with dd so that my dh could let me sleep a few more hours in the morn. As far as the pump, I had a double but never used both sides at the same time if that helps. former wohm who successfuly nursed and pumped and db had no formula: start a bottle by 2 weeks if bfing is going well. Have dh give a bottle at least once every other day (and you pump at that time). You don't need to get the crzy designer babby bottles: gerber drop ins work fine (and many of my friends who had trouble getting db to latch on a bottle finally found that they worked best). Try and buidl up a little freezer stash beofre you head back to work (feed, shower, pump) after baby is about 6 weeks old. Pumping is most successful earlier in the day and after you drink a huge, huge glass of water. Oatmeal encourages lactation, as well. Good Luck! [ Reply | More ]
