Cancer risk is not clear. Emphysema is also probably dose-dependent, and also dependent on your genetic risk towards having this, but female smokers are probably more susceptible to this than male smokers are. However, studies definitely show that smoking as little as 1-2 cigarettes per day doubles your risk of having a heart attack. Not as relevant when younger, but starts to matter when you hit your 50s, if you are unable to stop. [ Reply | More ]

dear you, I used to smoke like you. Just loved having a ciggie at the end of the day. it was like a routine. I decided to quit as a wedding gift to dh (he had never smoked and grew up in a house where his dad chain-smoked and really hated the smell). Anyway, because it was so much a part of my relaxation routine, I chose to quit when I was on vacation, away from home, relaxed already. worked like a charm. GL [ Reply | More ]

We try getting him to sleep every 1.5-2 hrs, and we soothe a lot, but he can't settle down. He's clearly overtired. Do we start CIO? Is Ferber better? Very confused. Very tired. Feel bad for the boy. TIA. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

hmm, i honestly would say if his night sleep is good, don't push teh day sleep overly, let it happen and be happy that you have good night sleep. i'd get a sling and wear him in that, i'll bet he falls asleep that way. [ Reply | More ]

Well, he's not falling asleep in the baby bjorn or stroller lately either. So I'm not sure the sling will help. It's not that I want to push something that is bad for him; I can see he's exhausted and needs rest. Just not sure what else to do to help. [ Reply | More ]

Every kid is different. The average is around 7 mos,but there are early teethers & late teethers. FWIW, my dd was very drooly starting around 1.5 mos but is now 7.5 mos and just starting to actually teeth (I can see the bumps on her gums). [ Reply | More ]

I think it's a little young for CIO or Ferber. I think Ferber says btw 4-6 mos. I know you're close to 4 mos, but if it were me I'd wait a little. Have you tried a schedule? Not a rigid "you must do this at this time" schedule, but more of a routine. I read BabyWise and it worked for us. DD is not a good napper so I was flexible w/ that part of it (length wise) but it helped us both know what was coming next and at about what time so I think it helped her sleep. Hang in there. GL! We follow the 2-hr rule. So we start soothing between 1.5-2hrs. Every day that falls at a slightly different time, depending on when he starts his day. What is the babywise method? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.25.08, 12:54 PM Flag
»
It's a routine of eat, play, sleep (playing after eating so as not to get in the habit of falling asleep at the bottle or breast). Also includes a steady time to get up & go to bed each day. I think at that age, it's a 2.5-3 hour routine (eat, play for 1.5 hr, nap 1.5 hr or slight adjustment depending how much sleep your ds needs). Try googling it for more info or buy the book - it's just called "BabyWise". [ Reply | More ]

I never understood these theories, though. How can you control how long your db sleeps for? Just like I despise books that say the best morning nap is at 9am. How does that happen if db is awake by 5:30. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.25.08, 01:01 PM Flag
»
You don't control it. Some kids will sleep that long, some won't. That's why you may adjust the awake time to be longer if your dc doesn't need the entire nap. Or in my case, she was tired (at that age) after the 1.5 hrs so she'd sleep for as long as she needed and then we'd just play til it was time to eat. The more important thing is that the approx time of eating and the beginning of naps is the same and that dc isn't eating and going right to sleep. It might not work for everyone, but it (or a variation of it) worked for us. [ Reply | More ]

We sort of do that already b/c we don't put him down right after eating. We burp him, keep him upright, play a bit, etc. So I guess we do that in a way already. [ Reply | More ]

my db slept every hour at that age- one hour awake, then I would put her down for an hour, and so on. I got that strategy from No Cry Sleep Solution I think. [ Reply | More ]

at that age by db selpt for an hour tops, it was maddening! now at 7 months he has gotten into a more reliable nap schedule. I think at this age you just have to accept what works. CIO is too young and much harder for naps than nighttime sleep. It WILL change so just go with this and know it's not forever. [ Reply | More ]
