My 3 1/2 yo has been in swim lessons for years (first with parents, and now on his own). This summer I enrolled him in lessons at a different location because they have an outdoor pool [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

^^^ Anyway, the instructors are horrible. They just go through the motions of "teaching" but don't really connect or pay attention to whether the kids are trying or learning the instructions. There are a lot of high fives and a lot of splashing and half the time the kids aren't paying attention -- and the instructions don't do anything to try to get them engaged. Should I intervene somehow, or just accept that my son is in for a summer of pool playtime without learning much? [ Reply | More ]

is your goal that your 3.5 year old learn specific strokes? [ Reply | More ]

Well, yes -- we were hoping that by the end of the summer he'd master "front floating," which he was almost able to do when the last session ended. [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if getting them comfortable and enjoying their time in the pool at first isn't a good first activity. You can judge better but is it not possible that they are doing like stealth teaching knowing how contrary this age group can be? If not. Say something. [ Reply | More ]

is your kid having fun? I think that is the most important thing at this age. the more fun he has, the more comfortable he will be in the water, the faster he will learn to swim. [ Reply | More ]
