i want to be zoned into a particular school in bklyn. our neighborhood school is decent, but the one I want my ds to attend is great. we may rent an apartment in the area, but what is the process for being considered zoned to a school? how long before applying shall we rent a place? and would we have to maintain an apt throughout elementary school, or could we just do it for X number of months and then 'move'? thanks. why is this crap if we rent an apartment in the area? if i am willing to drive and pay two rents, what's the problem with this? [ Reply | More ]

You have to actually live in the freaking apt. The entitlement is just amazing. If you have so much freaking money, really move to the zone. [ Reply | More ]

It's not crap but you do have to actually live there - if you don't and they find out (and I hear they actually do investigate sometimes) you will be booted out. We have friends who rented an apartment in the zone they wanted and moved there for a year and a half - sublet their co-op - and then moved back, and it worked. [ Reply | More ]

we would be willing to do that. it's 5/10 mins away from us by car, so close enough to commute every day, but we love our current neighborhood, and don't want to move perma. [ Reply | More ]

if you love it so much embrace the school that goes with that neighborhood and work on making it a better school. But you probably don't love the nabe that much, do you? [ Reply | More ]

we do. problem is that a lot of kids from our nabe attend private schools, and those who attend public are different. i am not sure about how difficult it will be for my child to fit in when most of the kids can't afford the classes/clothing/etc. i know that it's shallow, but i would rather he be around other kids in a similar situation. it's in the less popular part of brooklyn - so unlikely that anyone on this board will be familiar with either school [ Reply | More ]

your kid will not care! For them all kids are the same. Until you come in and point out how different their families are and how much better your life is etc. etc. [ Reply | More ]

i am not sure. kids care about all sorts of noticeable things, like toys/trips/classes that we can afford and others cannot. [ Reply | More ]

They will investigate, if they suspect fraud. PS6 actually sent someone to a friend's building to make sure that the Super actually lived in the building where he worked. [ Reply | More ]

once dc is enrolled he's entitled to remain until his terminal year -- even if you move [ Reply | More ]

but you have to have actually lived in the apartment when you registered and on the first day of school. and if you didn't, dc can be kicked out at any time. [ Reply | More ]

Under the rules, if you reside in the catchment for one year (and that year has to be after the kindergarten year, I guess because K is not mandatory), your dc can stay at that school even if you move. [ Reply | More ]

First OR: It can actually be K, just not Pre-K. (Friends just moved and kids are staying at 261) [ Reply | More ]

The thing you should consider is how great your decent zoned school would be if involved parents like you didn't pull their kids out. That's how 261 went from being the crummy Cobble Hill school to one that is coveted and having its own problems from overcrowding. [ Reply | More ]

give OP a break - some people are happy and psyched to be pioneers and some aren't, don't want their kids to be guinea pigs in a program that is not "there" yet - it doesn't make them bad people. [ Reply | More ]

It makes her a bad person if she decides to commit fraud to get her kid a spot in another school. If she's willing to actually move to the zone for a while, that's a whole different situation - but cheating is wrong. [ Reply | More ]

i don't want to commit fraud, but without knowing what exactly the rules are, it's difficult to know what would constitute fraud and what would not. i don't want to teach my child how to cheat. [ Reply | More ]

Okay. But you should also consider what you are teaching him if you treat the "different" children in your neighborhood like zoo animals - it's great for your kid to see them for diversity sake, but not mingle with them. [ Reply | More ]

Then you should move into the smaller and more expensive apt. in the good zone. [ Reply | More ]

^^^And I get how all of this is unfair. The DOE in NYC has turned getting a decent education for your child into a blood sport. It's criminal. [ Reply | More ]

Moving to the zone for a year or two is not fraud. Pretending to move kind of is, and would involve having your child lie. [ Reply | More ]

oh, come on! The public school system relies on people who can see beyond the problems and roll up their sleeves and make it a better place. As OP said the school is decent and thus probably doesn't really need too much work to make it great. [ Reply | More ]

if i thought that my involvement would make a difference, i would not think twice about staying and getting involved. the problem is, most of the parents in our nabe's public do not have the time. [ Reply | More ]

Just give it a try for a couple of years and get involved. If it is hopeless you can still pull out and move to the other zone. [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't take that many people to be proactive, just a little effort. There are lots of things that can be done, and I'm sure that even the parents who seem too busy, would help if they were given specific things to do. Thats what is working with our school. [ Reply | More ]

The thing is, if you do this, with the overcrowding happening in the good schools, you are not guaranteed a spot. If the school is over capacitated, then they could send your dc to next nearest school. So keep this in mind. And as far as staying where you are, if you say your current zoned school is decent, a little investment with time and energy can do wonders. [ Reply | More ]

My MIL lives in subsidized housing and has to be in the apt at least once every 30 days to maintain residency (spends a lot of time in hospitals and being cared for by different family.) [ Reply | More ]

Continuing, the residence is legal if a parent lives there. Simply maintain a different residence for each parents. I believe that as long as that parent is days there at least one night, with less than 30 days between, you are totally legal. I'd maintain a log of every night, and move some mail, driver's license, etc. [ Reply | More ]

This came up in my family because a couple separated. But not legally. He just moved out til they worked it out or got divorced. As you can imagine, there was some back and forth on living arrangements that lasted years til legal separation (still no divorce, he still has keys and spends a lot of time at his wife's place, kinda crazy). Anyway, that was perfectly acceptable to the school district. [ Reply | More ]

Just move to the new zone. Your kid will want neighborhood playdates and you'll find yourself making friends there. If you try and maintain two places, your kid will be confused and will feel like an outsider. You can always move back later. And yes, they do check in many popular schools so you can't just 'rent' a place for the address. You would also have to tell your kid to lie when asked where he lives and do you really want to teach him to do that? [ Reply | More ]
