Most preschools have differents hours than elementary schools (e.g., 9-2, vs. 8:30 to 3:00), so that should be OK. Regarding the K and 4th graders the question is why are they in diff. schools and is one much better than the other?? In theory you can handle 1 kid and DH/nanny the other [ Reply | More ]

I think I responded on your other post (I had 2 in 2 different schools plus a baby). I'm a sahm and had 2 part time nannies/sitters so I basically had coverage from 8 am til 6/7 pm. The baby stayed home in the morning with the nanny while I took 1st grader and preschooler to school (preschooler was about 5-10 mins late to school every day all year, but the first half hour was free time). I had from about 10-1 free to run errands, appointments, gym, very pt job etc). Then I'd relieve sitter 1 and take baby from her. Sitter 2 usually picked up preschooler and I'd take baby with me to pick up gradeschooler. I don't see how you can do it unless you hire help (unless you and dh have extremely flexible schedules)...my dh could never help with it [ Reply | More ]

OP: thanks. I'm pretty sure it will work out. 4th grader is at zoned school, K at NEST. DH and I can split these drop offs in the am and preschooler is in an afternoon class. The pick up is a bit worrisome -- three schools, within 15 minutes of each other and they are not close. I'm most worried about juggling three different sets of parents/friends/activities/ volunteering/ playdates/ field trips/ etc. I guess it's part of what we signed on for with 3 kids! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Thought I was all done. Son did not make citywide but got good district placement (LL). However he is a summer boy and we had looked at a few schools last year and he loved one of them and was very disappointed when we told him that he was too young to start kindergarten there this year (we got "too young" feedback from PSD and were encouraged to try again). At the time we did not know how he would test on OLSAT so we told him he would go to zoned K and then would apply again. Now he keeps saying "I will go to LL for one year and then X" He is not discouraged even when I tell him that he would need to do K twice. He scored 98x3 on ERB this spring so would be a strong candidate at private (although definitely not a guarantee). Would you apply anyway just in case we don't like LL or just hope he forgets the whole darn thing? I am afraid that going back for a second interview this year will make it even harder for him if they don't choose him or we choose to stay public, but we could afford it if he got in... 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

why not wait a couple years in public then have your dc reapply for a higher grade, like 3rd or 4th? The schools don't usually make children repeat then. My dc entered 6th a year young for one private, and is now entering a tt HS and he just turned 13 in March. Nobody is asking him to repeat. He is doing great. Got into Stuy too but we decided to stay in private (in this case xfer to tt). I don't think it is such a great idea for a very bright kid to repeat K just bc of his DOB. OTOH if he seems immature to you it could be a good idea to have him do K twice, especially if he does not mind the idea. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's the extra helpers in the classroom keeping the achievement steady. If not for the extra hands, the achievement gap would be remarkably higher due to more developmental issues with kids - both clinical (ADHD) as well as worse parenting, kids just aren't disciplined and taught to sit still, be quiet in class when teacher is talking and to respect the authority of adults. Kids are taught at too young an age to be familiar with adults and not respectful. They also have no attention spans thanks to the world of video soundbites that they're exposed to too early and too often. [ Reply | More ]

np. Yeah, and kids today are wimps, too. Why, when I was a kid we had to walk 20 miles to school, uphill both ways through raging snow, blah blah blah blah blah blah. Whatever. Kids haven't changed much, if at all, since we were kids. And I highly doubt your rose-colored recollections of your kindergarten days. [ Reply | More ]

Kids have changed a lot. They're much bigger brats that talk back to their parents and don't have much respect. And my recollections were of upper elementary school grades, and I walked around the corner to school. Do your kids have actual chores to do in the house like laundry, taking out the garbage or vacuuming, that they don't get allowance for doing? Probably not. I am shocked at how many of my dc's peers have no responsibilities and are still so ungrateful and whiny. They misbehave in public and their parents don't do much of anything. It's pretty appalling how ill-mannered and rude children are - and then I hear parents bemoaning how miserable their little darlings are to them. Ha! [ Reply | More ]

Actually, that's a skewed way of looking at the research. What research shows is that learning dramatically decreases once the student to teacher ratio is more than 1:1. Then it's pretty low across the board. Since classes can't be 1:1, obviously for non-academic reasons a smaller class is way better for a child's emotional growth, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on what research you are looking at, plenty supports small class sizes and even small ability groups in math and reading. [ Reply | More ]
