Here is what MayoClinic.com says about Coxsackie, aka Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Oral ingestion is the main source of coxsackievirus infection and hand-foot-and-mouth disease. The illness spreads by person-to-person contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters, or the stool of someone with the infection. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is most common in children in child care settings, where diaper changing and potty training are constant, and little hands often are in and out of the mouth frequently. [ - ] I was diagnosed with shingles this week, and between the pain and the medication I'm barely functional. Still, I've had to go nearly full out anyway to watch after ds and get to doctors, get some work done, etc. Friend (who has a ds the same age) took ds for the whole day today, and all I've done is sleep. Can't tell you how grateful I am to have a friend who would do this! 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Thanks. What did you do in terms of medication? How long did the rash last? It's not so easy though. I'm a single mom. The timing of this is pretty unfortunate. If ds were at school, which just ended, I know I could take sick days and get rest during the day. Also, his babysitter, who works for me three days a week, never had chicken pox, so she can't come to work until she gets the vaccine (which I suspect she has not bothered trying to do), so it's actually easier to go to work and put ds in work daycare (where at least he can run around and play with other kids, but work ain't exactly resting.... I'm not sure. I think I read something about the correlation with the rise of the chicken pox vaccine, although I'm not sure how that makes sense. I do know that I am grateful that my ds and my friend's ds both were vaccinated; otherwise my friend couldn't have taken him today, and I might have ended up taking care of a sick ds while going through all this.
