Has anyone recently sold, then rented? We sold our apt faster than anticpated, but still haven't found anything to buy. DH feels like renting is a waste of money. I'm just looking to get settled somewhere for dd to go to school. Any real estate or financial people have opinions? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

we sold and started renting with no intention to buy. We LOVE going back to renting and will likely never own our own place again. [ Reply | More ]

op: really? how come? I like the idea of moving in somewhere and not having to renovate, but long term, we'd want to make a place where we can do what we want. I'm thinking we'll rent for a year. Where do you live? [ Reply | More ]

brooklyn. we just moved from manhattan and compared to selling/buying it was so easy. and we'll move to a bigger apt in about 2 years. Since we have young kids our needs are quickly changing so it's easier for us to move than renovate and change our own place. [ Reply | More ]

oh and ps: we thought we'd found a great school in manhattan but it turned out to be terrible for our dd. so glad we were able to easily move to another zone. [ Reply | More ]

we thought we would have to do this because of work being done on new place-we actually approached our buyer about renting for 6 mos, which he agreed to. may be an option for you to consider [ Reply | More ]

op: our buyers are so anxious to get in. no way would they agree to this. but we actually need to be in our new neighborhood for school anyway. I feel like we need to be very smart about investing the money we make from sale so it actually earns while we're renting. [ Reply | More ]

It could be that renting will be better for you if the market continues to go south. You can bide your time and really look around (even to the level of the streets you want) then go in for the purchase. [ Reply | More ]

as long as the dollar is low vs other curious, manhattan re will hold its value within a range. problem is that wall street is a significant contributor to wealth in nyc, and wall street bonuses are going to be negatively impacted this year. rent for a year and buy next year. see the nytimes article in the real estate section this weekend about all the perks for luxury renters.. you can negotiate A LOT [ Reply | More ]
