Thought I was all done. Son did not make citywide but got good district placement (LL). However he is a summer boy and we had looked at a few schools last year and he loved one of them and was very disappointed when we told him that he was too young to start kindergarten there this year (we got "too young" feedback from PSD and were encouraged to try again). At the time we did not know how he would test on OLSAT so we told him he would go to zoned K and then would apply again. Now he keeps saying "I will go to LL for one year and then X" He is not discouraged even when I tell him that he would need to do K twice. He scored 98x3 on ERB this spring so would be a strong candidate at private (although definitely not a guarantee). Would you apply anyway just in case we don't like LL or just hope he forgets the whole darn thing? I am afraid that going back for a second interview this year will make it even harder for him if they don't choose him or we choose to stay public, but we could afford it if he got in... if you really want him to go to private do it..if not don't bother. You may be pleasantly surprised and really like this new public school. he may love it too [ Reply | More ]

I am not letting him call all the shots--I am pretty ambivalent myself. I also loved the private. But I feel that it would be that private alone or else stick with public. [ Reply | More ]

np: I think you do not understand how much you are sharing your ambivalence and anxiety with your dc. He is way too informed about the process and your ambivalent decision making. You need to make him feel secure by taking a decision, and only discussing it again with him if you decide to make another decision. he will have a hard time settling in if you are all over the map about everything. go back and forth about this with your dh or therapist, not your 5 yo. If you can afford private, do it. As you probably know from touring, there is a difference and I am amazed by the thoughtfulness and caring DC is receiving in private school. GL [ Reply | More ]

Who is the parent here???? Once your child has friends in his new school (and if you discourage him from thinking he actually gets to make such big decisions and not his parents) he'll move on. You are in for crazy big problems later on with this child if you don't assert yourself as the authority figure in this home. [ Reply | More ]

why not wait a couple years in public then have your dc reapply for a higher grade, like 3rd or 4th? The schools don't usually make children repeat then. My dc entered 6th a year young for one private, and is now entering a tt HS and he just turned 13 in March. Nobody is asking him to repeat. He is doing great. Got into Stuy too but we decided to stay in private (in this case xfer to tt). I don't think it is such a great idea for a very bright kid to repeat K just bc of his DOB. OTOH if he seems immature to you it could be a good idea to have him do K twice, especially if he does not mind the idea. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's a big mistake to include a 4 or 5 year old in on the school process - leads to stress and fights. Did YOU have a say in where you went to K? I highly doubt it. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. My 5 yo wants to ride the subway by himself. I don't let him do that any more than I let him decide where he's going to school. [ Reply | More ]

You really want you smart kid to repeat K??? This summer b-day thing is wacky, no other part of the country has June kids in the grade below, except in Texas for football prospects. Also, of course you need to make the decision not him. [ Reply | More ]

why did you even discuss with a 5yo that he did not get into a school? We just told our DS we were looking at schools to find the best one for him and then presented to him the school he was going to. [ Reply | More ]
