[ - ] Can we talk about kids and eating? I have an 8yo and 5yo who eat, but prefers veggies and fruit to meat and my 5yo eats limited varieties of fruits, veg, and meat. It makes it hard when we go to family gatherings because they won't try casseroles or other new foods. What would you do? 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I would stress about it. Let them serve themselves if it's buffet style. Self-serve or not, they should be polite. But they are in the charge or how much they eat and of what. If you feel very stressed, get Ellyn Satter's book Child of Mine about feeding. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think so. Besides infection risk, you'd have the bleeding to worry about. I don't think tampons are okay either. [ Reply | More ]

I never heard this, though common sense is no pools while bleeding since you aren't supposed to wear tampons post-partum. I'd think if your bleeding has stopped it'd be ok to do whatever you want. [ Reply | More ]

We are going to this time around, didn't for 3.4mo ds. OB's have mixed views. One sold me on it though when she said she wished she banked her 6yo son's blood for the future. We're doing it since the science is advancing SO rapidly, and more and more diseases are being identified which can be treated this way. Also, I like that it's potentially useable for the entire family. Basically another insurance policy. The dr's did say that if we're going to do it, do it w/a major player -- CBR or Viacord. See if there are any bike shops in your neighborhood which sell used bikes. The price difference is not so huge and a used name brand bike is infinitely better (and a good bit safer) than a bike put together by some guy making $7/hr. [ Reply | More ]

My cyclist friends swear by Bicycle Habitat (http://bicyclehabitat.com/) but the truth is you don't need a high end shop. Find a neighborhood shop and give that guy your money. The high end shops are making their money on $5,000+ bikes. An inexpensive kids bike is not making their day. And the local guy is going to be there for you when you need your brakes adjusted, or your flat tire fixed. (If anyone in Brooklyn is reading this, "The Bike Shop" on Union Street, between Columbia and the BQE is a great shop for this kind of stuff.) [ Reply | More ]

I know, my now 2yo was almost off them until his baby brother arrived. Now, he seems addicted. He drinks from a cup just fine, but he still begs for several bottles throughout the day and for the first time wants one to sleep (I brush his teeth after he finishes while we read books and he sleeps with the empty one). Seems ok for now since it's in response to new baby at home. Once things settle down again, it'll be easier to get rid of the bottles. Cold turkey is painful, but quick and easy. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks, that is what I originally thought but it has been 7months and it seems to be getting worse. I know he is using it for "stress" due to changes and I am ok with that- I was just wondering how long to let it go on. Part of me says 'my god he is only 2 let the kid have a bottle' but the other part of me can't help but listen to all the "advice" in the baby books about taking them away at 1yr. [ Reply | More ]

i totally understand you missing him, but remember that the trip will be work for you and not much fun for the nanny and your db. in your home, they will be happy and the schedule will be easy. i wouldn't take them. i used to stress about these trips, too, but decided to just enjoy the trip (as much as i could) and it really helped - i went out to dinner (and didn't wipe anyone else's mouth even once!), had drinks at a cool bar i'd always wanted to visit...do something for yourself. working mom guilt is bad enough - don't make it tough on nanny or db. gl! He can't use a condom for a month? I'm not sure what the reasoning is behind waiting a period of time after stopping the pill before TTC, but I have heard numerous people say it so I assume there's a reason. And if that's the case, he should either strap on the seat belt or plan to stay off the ride for a month. [ Reply | More ]
