[ - ] Need to vent. Just moved to the suburbs, have hired our city babysitter to come be an au pair for the summer before she goes off to college. She couldn't do 7 days a week, so we worked it out for weekdays only. We pay her salary and her gas to get to/fro ($50 extra a week). Now two weeks into it, she says her mother wants her to come home on Thursday instead of Fridays. DH has Fridays off for summer hours, now we'll have no time alone like we planned. We and the kids adore her, but I'm just annoyed and wondering if it's really her mom who is saying this or if she is using that as an excuse. 30 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

She can't. The issue is that her mother doesn't think she will have time to get everything done that she needs to before she leaves in 2 days a week. [ Reply | More ]

I think she is nervous about going away to school, wants to spend more time with friends. Maybe her mom wants to be able to spend more time with her as well (I sure would). I think you're lucky that she agreed to come at all. That said, its too bad you can't get time alone. Maybe you should find another babysitter, as a way to ease your kids into someone new. try to make it work. a good babysitter is hard to find. sounds like it is a combo of her and her mom both wanting the extra time. she has zero social life at your hosue and she is an 18 year old for goodness sakes. can't say I blame her. however, if this scheudle absoultely doens't work, you could try to find someone else....maybe she could work every other friday until 2:00 or 3:00? [ - ] Didn't Maria Montessori develop an educational philosophy for poor Italian orphans who were expected to one day become dutiful factory workers? Pure Montessori seems awfully controlling to me, for example, taking materials away from a child with an explanation that they can have them back if used 'the proper way'? I read a scenario where a child took something like the brown stairs and the pink blocks and began to fantasy role play, calling one block the mommy and one the daddy and was discouraged. It seemed to me the child was just trying to make sense out of the unknown by applying his/her own experience to it. I'm hoping for no flames. None intended by me. Just trying to understand it. I understand most American schools are not purists, so maybe that makes a difference. Only then how do you know what you are getting? TIA 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Why shouldn't kids learn that school materials have a purpose and that there is a time and a place for fantasy play? I've had kids in Montessori programs for 8 years and they have not suffered nor are they heading for the factory. In fact, DD (now 10) had imaginary lambs she would bring to school and tie up outside each morning. (No, her name is not Mary, LOL.) [ Reply | More ]

Yes, it was developed for poor undereducated Italian orphans. As with anything - if you start at the bottom you have no where to go but up. I am so not a fan of Montessori either! Especially the "original" montessori program. These days, anyone can slap montessori in their name and it doesn't mean they practice exactly what MM intended. Some do a little, some do a lot - but the entire philosophy is counterintuitive (to me). [ Reply | More ]

In a pure traditional Montessori program, there is a feeling that young children have difficulty distinguishing between reality and fantasy, and therefore fantasy should be postponed until the child is firmly grounded in reality. The tasks and activities the children do are reality oriented.Montessori said that it is a mistake for children to amuse themselves with toys, that children are not really interested in toys for long without the real intellectual interest of associating them with sizes and numbers. In Montessori, each manipulative material is focused toward a specific learning concept and has a step-by-step procedure for being used. Math counting rods, for example, are not to be transformed into castle walls. However, some would say that the very act of fantasy transformation *is* the way children begin to make sense of the world and to suppress that fantasy play in early childhood goes entirely against the nature of a child. It happens to be one of the loveliest public school buildings in Manhattan. It has fabulous proportions (high ceilings, big windows)and was completely renovated inside about 10 years ago. You're judging a school by it's "cover" and missing all the good stuff. Which includes the fact that the G&T there is very good. I'm an older mom and know many kids who went there for G&T, to Delta for MS and are now headed to top HS's. [ Reply | More ]

I am not disagreeing, I said above that publishing a 5 year list makes it more difficult for newcomers to the private schools in NYC to compare year to year. [ Reply | More ]

^^ oh I see the confusion here, yes, in order to compete with each other - in order for each school to better mask bad single years and make it difficult for newcomers to compare year to year and levels of consistency they all publish 5 year lists. I think we are saying the same thing. I am saying they want to mask the bad in order to compete against each other better and you are saying that you feel that makes competition less but we are saying the same thing [ Reply | More ]

That placement struck me as what people here would describe as 2nd Tier which is why I commented. Lot's of safety schools and a smaller than typical percentage of ivies. [ Reply | More ]

2008 placements were relatively weaker across the board. Unprecedent number of applicants. This trend will continue for a good while. Placement in you called 2nd tier would be more akin to 3rd tier etc. in a year like 2008. The fact is that all the top universities really go after stellar public school kids these days. it was the most romantic and sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me - we grew up together and used to go out every night in the summer catching fireflies in old skippy jars and such, he took me to the park one night to go for a walk which was nthing out of the norm and there were fireflies out so we started catching them like when we were kids and then he came over to me with his hands together and said you have to see this one babe and he got down on one knee and i still didnt think anything of it, then he opened his hands and there was my ring and he said the most heartfelt words and i ended up blubbering like an idiot then i jumped onto him and gave him a hug and of course said yes!!
