[ - ] My brother and sister-in-law (not married, actual brother and sister) are coming to visit. They bought their tickets in April and told us they planned to stay in a hotel in Manhattan (we are in Brooklyn Heights). Now they have changed their minds and are "too broke" to pay for a hotel so they decided they will stay with us. We have no room for 6 people and when we told them this and offered to pay for a sublet or hotel, they refused, saying they don't want us to spend money for them. They bought Yankees tickets last night, totaling $1250. Any mantras to get me calm about this? 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Its tough. I wouldn't narrow the search on this. I would tour as many school as possible and see if you get a feeling either way. The truth is, most children will do just fine in either. Some children need one or the other. If you don't know which your dc is - just keep in mind - nothing that is done can't be undone. Good luck! I had a blast touring. [ Reply | More ]

Try and tour a few at both ends of the spectrum to get an idea before you apply--Calhoun and City & Country are very progressive, while the SS schools tend to be the most traditional. Many are in between, too, and it's hard to get a good sense of the schools until you tour. In any case, it's good to keep an open mind, and it's likely you'll get a gut feeling one way or the other when you tour. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

You're welcome. Visit Calhoun's website--their head of school has written some great articles on the advantages of progressive education, and there are links to other info as well. Not sure on traditional, probably just Google it and check out some of the SS school sites (girl or boy)? [ Reply | More ]

There is plenty & you can find tons of research to support whichever side you are one. From my own experience in education I have seen that more traditional school with some great progressive ideas tend to work for the most children. That is not a hard and fast rule by any means and it is hard to find to today any traditional school that has not to some extent been influence by the best of progressive ed. Many more progressive schools have recently incorporated some more traditional practices, but it is easier to find a "purely" progressive school than it is to find a "purely" traditional one. I really think the best thing to do is to tour schools and get a feel of what might work for your dc and family, also talk to dc's current teacher, most have toured and are familiar with the schools their families are applying to. If you have a dc who picks up things on his own and/or is very advanced, consider progressive which suits kids who do well with self-paced learning and go into depth on fewer topics (than cover all topics but not in depth). [ Reply | More ]

I would, too. I miss my hardcover Oz books. I had antique ones from my Grandmother, but now I have no idea where they are. Figure my mom probably sent them to Goodwill. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Follow-up on PS 59: I went to the open house earlier this summer and was horrified. Everyone says the principal is "great". Having heard her speak, I have no idea why. No one could hear her and she did nothing to remedy the situation. Further, she had no answers to even basic questions. Discuss. 29 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

are you so mom? she complained about the same thing. I'm curious - would you call someone awful because they are soft spoken? Or if you couldn't hear what she had to say, how would you know she was awful? I was confused by that the last time this was posted. [ Reply | More ]

OP-- this is the first time I have posted this, which must mean someone else agrees. And, no, it's not that she was soft-spoken it's that she had no answers to basic questions and did nothing to address the several people who told her they couldn't hear her. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, this conversation has been had on UB. What basic questions. Chances are she did not have the info from the DOE yet. She is a great principal. If you do decide to send dc to 59, I'm sure you will realize that. [ Reply | More ]

She's not a teacher. Doesn't have the teacher voice. It might be a good thing. It probably might mean she is not a screamer. [ Reply | More ]
