I just had to laugh today - finally found some BL books - we discussed the other day and you were kind of cold to them - I see why. It was so funny to be sitting in the book store thinking about a stranger and laughing! We are still searching for those hard to find transitional early reader with plot books - had success with Johnny Lion - and doing the other ususal suspects too. Just wanted to share. Have a nice day! [ Reply | More ]

Can you recommend some light beach reading for me, and something for 7 yo DD who loves but finished magic tree house and ramona books (and most AG books too)? [ Reply | More ]

A few old-fashioned ideas for dd (maybe off the beaten path) Betsy-Tacy books, Box Car Children, Mrs Piggle Wiggle, Pippi Longstocking or The Children of Noisy Village. If she is ready for a step up, try the Eddie Eager books, starting with Half Magic. Other more recently written series that are easy summer reading: Daragonslayers Academy and A to Z mysteries. For you: what have you enjoyed recently or in the passed few years...then I can be mroe helpful..... [ Reply | More ]

Another fan of Caddie Woodlawn here -- so happy that others loved it, too. How about the All of a Kind Family series or the Carolyn Woodward books like B Is for Betsy? [ Reply | More ]

I was so happy to see them at the Tenement Museum bookshop. I can't wait until DD is older and gets to read them. Then I'll drag her down to the LES to see all the sites and eat Guss's pickles, appetizing at Russ & Daughters & Schimmel's knishes. Oy! I would love to meet you 2 fellow booklovers. So nice to have a pleasant dialogue on the new UB. [ Reply | More ]

DD's school visits there in 3rd grade and I managed to be the class mom for that one. They opened a new room (after we went) that focuses on Irish immigrants too. I want to go again. [ Reply | More ]

Bookmom: me too. And just wait until she hits 7-8-9-10. There is some wonderful children's literature that has been written in th past 10 years and in the wake of JK Rowling's success. I hope you've read the HP series, [ Reply | More ]

not bookmom, but I'd add Finn Family Moomintroll, second the idea of Betsy-Tacy books (I still love those), Catwings, Mr. Popper's Penguins and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. For the mom, very light reading but Mrs. Perfect is fun. Not as light but good is The Post-Birthday World. [ Reply | More ]

That's so exciting isn't it? I love it when DS loves a book I loved. We are reading all of the Little House books right now and it's so great. And he went nuts for James & the Giant Peach, which was one of my very favs as a kid. I can't wait til he's ready for Wrinkle in Time. [ Reply | More ]

It is great. We've been read The Great Brain lately, which i loved as a kid. I'm also getting to know newer series like Magic Tree House and Captain Underpants, but the language in those seems much less rich. [ Reply | More ]

np from above. I'm so jealous! My mother gave my old copies away when I went to college. Now we have to make due with paperbacks, and we've already had to replace Comet in Moominland and Finn Family because we wore them out with rereadings. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe paperbacks were made better when we were dc. I had wonderful hardcopies that my aunt had sent me from the UK. I still guilt trip my mom about it a little when I get the chance. ;) [ Reply | More ]

I would, too. I miss my hardcover Oz books. I had antique ones from my Grandmother, but now I have no idea where they are. Figure my mom probably sent them to Goodwill. [ Reply | More ]
