Trying to narrow down the choices for private schools next year. We are not sure whether traditional or progressive might be best for our db. Anyone BDTD -- any advice? Any recommendations for readings on this topic? Many thanks in advance. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Its tough. I wouldn't narrow the search on this. I would tour as many school as possible and see if you get a feeling either way. The truth is, most children will do just fine in either. Some children need one or the other. If you don't know which your dc is - just keep in mind - nothing that is done can't be undone. Good luck! I had a blast touring. [ Reply | More ]

Us too--as horrendous as the process was, I really enjoyed the tours. [ Reply | More ]

There are places that are a little of both. I'm not too familiar with privates, though. Have you googled traditional vs progressive teaching or pedagogy? [ Reply | More ]

Apply to both, once you tour it become much more clear what will work for you dc and your family. [ Reply | More ]

Try and tour a few at both ends of the spectrum to get an idea before you apply--Calhoun and City & Country are very progressive, while the SS schools tend to be the most traditional. Many are in between, too, and it's hard to get a good sense of the schools until you tour. In any case, it's good to keep an open mind, and it's likely you'll get a gut feeling one way or the other when you tour. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

You're welcome. Visit Calhoun's website--their head of school has written some great articles on the advantages of progressive education, and there are links to other info as well. Not sure on traditional, probably just Google it and check out some of the SS school sites (girl or boy)? [ Reply | More ]

There is plenty & you can find tons of research to support whichever side you are one. From my own experience in education I have seen that more traditional school with some great progressive ideas tend to work for the most children. That is not a hard and fast rule by any means and it is hard to find to today any traditional school that has not to some extent been influence by the best of progressive ed. Many more progressive schools have recently incorporated some more traditional practices, but it is easier to find a "purely" progressive school than it is to find a "purely" traditional one. I really think the best thing to do is to tour schools and get a feel of what might work for your dc and family, also talk to dc's current teacher, most have toured and are familiar with the schools their families are applying to. If you have a dc who picks up things on his own and/or is very advanced, consider progressive which suits kids who do well with self-paced learning and go into depth on fewer topics (than cover all topics but not in depth). [ Reply | More ]
