[ - ] Sad night. DH agree to watch DD tonight & in the morning. I got all decked up to go out with friends (it's been a while) and started out the door to meet up for dinner and big concert. My stomach had been feeling weird for a few days and I've had low energy...but didn't expect to feel a little bubble and then yes, diarrhea explosion. Had to wash clothes and now have to stay at home and don't dare to eat anything. *sigh* 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

in my mind, it's like the dog run rule: if you bring a toy, expect to share it. it does kind of bother me when another kid plays with dc's toy because i m a little controlling and territorial, but i know that it will just be a minute before the other dc loses interest and moves on - and, if not, we just do bait and switch when necessary. in other words, i know it's my issue. I think if you bring sand toys, baby strollers or that sort of thing to the playground - you will most likely have to expect to share. I want my dc to understand the concept of sharing her toys. I agree, though, about those moms that don't teach their kids to ask first or don't pay attention at all. [ Reply | More ]

PS 198 is in the same building as Lower Lab. I am very sure that slowly many sibs who did not make the cutoff will go to PS 198. [ Reply | More ]

First off, 198 has kids from further east than 3rd Avenue b/c of PS 151. Ironically all of the kids who live in the Holmes and Isaacs projects go to 151 and not 158, 6, or 290 like they are supposed to. The white kids in the 151 zone go to 6, 158 and 290 while the Black & Hispanic kids go to 198. Second, 198 has higher scores than MANY other schools in the DOE and just because it shares a building with Lower Lab does not mean it gets the overflow of SIBs. Gosh, you people seriously need help...and a clue. [ Reply | More ]

NP: 198 zone stretches to 100th and east to 2nd ave, and yes, many from Holmes/Isaacs projects attend b/c of the closure of 151, as it is the closest school. But there are an increasing number of non black/hispanic kids attending 198 in recent years, including sibs of LL kids. [ Reply | More ]

what makes a school fabulous for any given dc is about more than the test scores. if a dc can't have a social life, that's an issue, and it doesn't matter if the dcs who are shunning him are white, yellow or green. it doesn't need to be a white school but it does have to be a school at which whites are welcome. Elmira? All I know is that every family I know from up there has sent their kids to amazing colleges and universities. The kids are so mature and well spoken too. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know, maybe college towns like Saratoga or Ithaca would have good public schools? It is closer but I love Rhinebeck, not sure what the schools are like there. [ Reply | More ]

Ithaca is 5-6 hrs away. Great public schools (no private and all the professors send kids there). Too far, though. [ Reply | More ]

Some beautiful towns in the Finger Lakes region (though may be 4-5 hours from NYC?) Skaneateles is one that has a strong school system. [ Reply | More ]

I've heard Oneonta is very good. Also a college town. (Rhinebeck schools are weak. A lot of people send their kids to private school in Poughkeepsie.) [ Reply | More ]

Look first at any towns that have colleges/universities. Those will tend to have the strongest school systems (both SUNY colleges and say, Skidmore, Cornell, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

I agree. We have friends in Saratoga, where Skidmore is. They are very happy and it is lovey town, with some nice restaurants, places to shop etc. [ Reply | More ]

They'd go to SIL (DH's sister) and her DH. She and DH are close and have a nice relationship and I feel okay about this choice (I'm an only child, so it's not as though I have a sibling to consider!). For now, my parents would handle most of the $ -- but my ILs are in better health, so I'm not sure that it should stay this way (I trust both sets of GPs), but I'd also want my parents involved. DC's will go to DH's sister. Our assets will go into trust, with a trusted friend/lawyer as the trustee. Funds will be disbursed from the trust to SIL for dc's expenses as necessary. [ Reply | More ]

We have designated guardians and then have a trust w/ several people designated as the trustees (not the same as the guardians). We also set up the trust to the money doesn't just vest when the kids hit 21. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, we have chosen a guardian. Luckily, dh and I agreed from teh get go. We do not have a trust per say - but all of our assest (medium amount) will be sold and controlled by the childs guardian. Its my dh's sister. [ Reply | More ]
