Do any of the good general ed schools (6,290, 199, 40, 234, 89, 41, 3, etc.) have low-income housing in the catchment? I am just wondering if there is a sad pattern here about which schools UMC people are willing to send their kids to and invest in. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OP. Yes, I think that is true for 6, 290, & 158 on the UES. 198 is still not strong even though 90% of the streets zoned for it are wealthy. Kind of sad if this is the situation. [ Reply | More ]

you have it backwards - these schools are stong because the wealthy people who live in the catchment made them strong with financial investment - If people in projects made their schools just as fabulous they would be desireable [ Reply | More ]

OP. I understand that, but it seems that if 90% of a zone is made up of wealthy streets but at least one project, forget it, the school is SOL. For PS198, the zone goes from 5th Avenue to 3rd, about 89th street to 96th. It's not that different from 290 or 6 in makeup. But six of the streets are bad. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. PS 11 in Chelsea has its number of project kids but the school is doing better by the year. As long as enough families are involved and raise money it will overcome the handicaps. [ Reply | More ]

PS 198 is in the same building as Lower Lab. I am very sure that slowly many sibs who did not make the cutoff will go to PS 198. [ Reply | More ]

First off, 198 has kids from further east than 3rd Avenue b/c of PS 151. Ironically all of the kids who live in the Holmes and Isaacs projects go to 151 and not 158, 6, or 290 like they are supposed to. The white kids in the 151 zone go to 6, 158 and 290 while the Black & Hispanic kids go to 198. Second, 198 has higher scores than MANY other schools in the DOE and just because it shares a building with Lower Lab does not mean it gets the overflow of SIBs. Gosh, you people seriously need help...and a clue. [ Reply | More ]

a clue, eh? Well, I for one, will send my white kids to 198 if they can't follow their older brother to LL. It is not that uncommon. Do your kids go to PS 198? [ Reply | More ]

NP: 198 zone stretches to 100th and east to 2nd ave, and yes, many from Holmes/Isaacs projects attend b/c of the closure of 151, as it is the closest school. But there are an increasing number of non black/hispanic kids attending 198 in recent years, including sibs of LL kids. [ Reply | More ]

Not necessarily. Not if there aren't enough white kids at the school. Many Chinatown schools are excellent, but UMC white families won't send their kids there. [ Reply | More ]

totally understandable imo and it has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with not wanting dc to be isolated and alone. [ Reply | More ]

But it goes against what the OR wrote: "If people in projects made their schools just as fabulous they would be desireable". FALSE! It needs to be a white school too. [ Reply | More ]

what makes a school fabulous for any given dc is about more than the test scores. if a dc can't have a social life, that's an issue, and it doesn't matter if the dcs who are shunning him are white, yellow or green. it doesn't need to be a white school but it does have to be a school at which whites are welcome. we live in the wv and chose our zoned school over a g&t because we like the idea of a neighborhood school. are there dcs from the projects there? no, because there are no projects in the zone. am i supposed to feel guilty about this and move to a zone with a worse school that also happens to be more "economically diverse"? get real. No! Absolutely not. Everyone just has to pick the school/housing combination that works for them. That's what I'm going to do myself for my kids. It's just sort of sad. [ Reply | More ]

116 does. It has Phipps housing and about 6-8 project bldgs. It also has another develpment of about 8 bldgs. that used to be low to moderate income, but is now going to market rate, so it is about 35 percent market. [ Reply | More ]

From what I remember Phipps housing was a co-op. Did that change? That isn't low income even if it's a mitchel llama co-op it isn't low income [ Reply | More ]

Oh, I don't know those. Phipps apparently has done a lot of bldg in the neighborhood. But 23rd street should be ps 40 anyway. I think 116 goes from 42nd to 24th (or 25th). [ Reply | More ]

I think you are pointing out something that has limited the desirability for some of PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights. I would love to see schools like PS 8 and PS 11 in Chelsea make a better education possible for all students. I think PS 116 has done this (although the housing in its zone may be more middle class than some "projects." [ Reply | More ]

truthfully, even 261 has this issue, tho it doesn't include projects. it's funny because if people were honest they would say they want racial diversity, but not socio-economic diversity. [ Reply | More ]

Projects in the zone and also the number of students receiving a free lunch seem to correlate with whether a school is considered good or bad. [ Reply | More ]
