That's such a loaded question. How about public vs. private police? Drug regulation? Public all the way - too many hidden agendas in private - same for schools. For schools, I'd rather go to public rather than private not just because they might be run as a more efficient business model; I send my kids to public school because I prefer the values of the more economically and socially/ethnically diverse population rather than that of private school. At well-run public schools, I believe my kids are getting an all-around better education as people, even if some classroom lessons might not always be as strong or varied. They have plenty of time to fill in during their college years for specializing. They're getting a great public education. [ Reply | More ]

If it was a trama situation, definately the public hospital. And every doctor I know tells me this. In NYC, if you are in a major accident, you want to go to Bellview. It's the best for trama. [ Reply | More ]

Having worked in both private and public, I would definitely choose private hospital for better nursing care and amenities. However, if I was hit by a car, I would prefer public hospital trauma center. If I had no health insurance, I would go to a public hospital, but choose carefully for a better one associated with a good academic medical center, where medical care will be just as good as in private, but with much less frills. Obviously, I would prefer to own my own home for financial reasons, but would rent from NYC housing if in a decent neigborhood and dirt cheap. [ Reply | More ]

As with public vs. private schools, often the choice is not ours to make, whether or not we can afford private. With hospitals, those run by the city are generally better for trauma, and proximity is a factor in an emergency. With housing, there are still some subsidized projects that are great, but most have gone market rate unless you're really low income and/or have a legit spot. All NYC rentals are governed by rent regulations. For schools, you may have a terrific zoned school, or DC may test into a terrific selective public. If you can afford and get accepted to private school, your child can be dismissed at any time for any reason. In public, once you're in, you're in. DC can't be "counseled out," except in extreme circumstances that require the DOE to prove that DC needs to be transferred, and even then, they must transfer DC to another school. If DC is "counseled out" of private, or you fail to make tuition payments, DC is just out on the street. [ Reply | More ]
