[ - ] Weird post, but, we have to go visit FIL for the weekend and I can't stand him for many reasons but one is he is a lonely and horny pervert and his subtle leering repulses me. He wants to take us to the community pool in his town and I seriously don't want to wear a bathing suit around him. I have an average body and I'm generally very uncomfortable and self conscious about myself in a bathing suit anyway but the idea of wearing one around him is gross. I generally try to be as unsexy and modest as possible in his presence. Would it be really Amish-like of me just to wear a sundress and say I'm not a big fan of being poolside? 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

He lives in bumf*ck Pennsylvania. There's nothing else to do there and he thinks the kids will like it which they may and I otherwise they would be bored out of their skulls, so I wouldn't want to take that away from them because I'm feeling a bit prudish. [ Reply | More ]

I bought a "schmatte" - basically a coverall/short sundress thing - at Bloomingdales for $80 to cover my swimsuit while I sit around. It does the trick. Just ignore FIL. Or have DH say something to him. [ Reply | More ]

I love the word schmatte! I am planning on wearing a shorter dress so I can dip my feet in the pool. Just don't even want to put on a bathing suit. Like I said, it's not my favorite thing to do even under different circumstances. I'm not overweight, just have always felt uncomfortable in bathing suits. [ Reply | More ]

talk with her about including #1 more, and making sure he isn't ignored - if she's so fantastic she will adjust. Remember that a new baby is probably exciting for her too. Also, she might be more of an "infant" nanny, in which case you might need to look for a new one [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] WWYD? On doctors (many) recommendations, I terminated my pregnancy at 29w. It was and is horrible, but I am at peace with my decision. My child was to born in a vegetative state, probably blind and deaf to boot. No hope of any recovery. Through my priest (he does not know I terminated), was linked with a support group, who sent to me a wonderful, beautiful mom who I really can connect with. Am really, really scared to tell her what really happened for fear she will condemn me. But I feel I owe her the truth, especially given why we are together and that we have shared the most personal information and feelings. Advice? 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

they can have candy once in a while but not on a daily basis. I also don't allow sugary cereals. Soda is like taking god knows how many tablespoons full of sugar. They dont' need it. Soda is also very addicting (the caffeine). When they are older if they want to try it fine but not now. They have their entire lives to eat crap and if I can show them good habits when they are young, they will hopefully grow up healthier. BTW I'm not a big sugar eater. My parents didn't give us a lot of sugar. I'm 40yr and never had a cavity in my life. I don't hunger for sugar nor do I miss it. your concept that letting them have soda on occasion is "starting something" is really insane. of course you're allowed to have your preferences, but you do seem millitant about this, as the other poster said. [ Reply | More ]

well that's the great thing about it..I get to raise my kids my way and you get to raise them your way. I'm sure there are things I allow them to do (like Watch TV) that many ppl would say OH NO too. I don't care if others parent differently. This is a choice we made and don't have an issue with it. I don't see anything militant about it. [ Reply | More ]

np: you really think that it's impossible? My kids haven't tried it either. Not something we buy in our home. I'm a sahm and they are with me all the time. Not shocking that there are kids who haven't tried it. Not like they haven't tried milk that would be shocking but soda? Not everyone gives crap to their kids just because [ Reply | More ]

Neither have mine (same ages). I drink bubbly water and they hate that. My dh hates anything with carbonation so he told them that soda is bubbly water with sugar and now they don't want to try it. I drink coke occassionally when we are out and they have never even asked to try it. they just assume it's gross like the bubbly water. [ Reply | More ]

my dcs (4 and 6) only get "soda" at very special occasions - then it is either martinellis (sparkling cider which is just apple juice) or juice mixed with seltzer water. Otherwise it is diluted juice, milk or water [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] My 1 yr old ds cried hysterically before EVERY nap and EVERY bedtime. We've done CIO for 2 MONTHS now. And I'm not doing it incorrectly - we've gotten to the point where we literally don't go back in after we walk out the door. (Started off with Ferber intervals, etc. and it prolonged the crying.) What gives??? Will he ever stop?? 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

What time of day would you suggest? Wakes up at 6:45. Is really only taking one nap right now (10am - 12) but will fall asleep in the stroller or the car at around 3:30. Otherwise no afternoon nap. I don't force the afternoon at all because morning is too much of a battle. [ Reply | More ]

News flash: CIO is not a recipe that applies to all children. For many it just doesn't work and I see that you keep escalating it. You have to stop it for now and deal with this in other ways (read the No cry sleep solutions, for example). [ Reply | More ]

I agree. 2 months is a long time (and we sleep trained, I'm not against it). But it does sound like your schedule is off, whether or not you keep trying to train [ Reply | More ]

Here are a few suggestions--if you can, try to eliminate the afternoon nap, even if its just for half an hour in the stroller. I find it is always harder for my 13 month old at bed-time if he sleeps at all later than 2:30 or 3pm. Also, try moving bed-time earlier. You are probably already doing this, but do the EXACT same thing every night for bed-time routine--even the same stories. Does ds have a "lovey" to take to bed? Keep it in the crib at all times, only for sleeping and not as a toy around the house. We had a tough time with CIO too but it eventually worked, he just needed lots of "cues" to tell him it was bed-time. Also, I must disclose that we rock him to sleep every night, in his dark room, it only takes 5-10 minutes and I know it is not "correct" according to sleep training, but it cut down the crying dramatically. However, once we put him the crib that is it, no more rocking if he wakes up when we put him down. Once every couple of weeks he will still do about 10 minutes of crying at bed-time. A very dark room also seemed to help--I taped black cardboard over his window. I hope this helps! [ Reply | More ]

OP: I agree - the late afternoon catnap might be his problem. It's tough to always avoid walking around or driving at all past 3 though. Especially when he doesn't wake up from his morning nap until noon. I'm thinking I need to push the morning nap later in the day, but he gets really cranky and rubs his eyes like crazy when I push it past 10. [ Reply | More ]

I'm the one who posted above about starting bedtime @ 6:30. If he's anything like my ds he will sleep longer that way and be less tired in the morning, then you can push the nap later [ Reply | More ]

^^^sorry for incomplete thought...he forgets to get cranky and I can push the nap later. I know it is really hard when you are a busy mom but if you can try not to have him in the car or stroller at that danger time of 3 or 4pm that helps too. Sometimes I try to have a "quiet hour" at around that time--reading stories or nursing but no sleeping. [ Reply | More ]

In the crib, no problem! But we were putting him down with a bottle in the crib. My ped told me I had to stop that and therefore he lost his big sleep cue. We tried to keep consistent with a routine at nap and bedtime including a blanket, songs, etc. but nothing seems to work that well. I am pretty sure our schedule is off. It is so hard to keep up - it feels like as soon as we get one thing figured out, something else changes completely! [ Reply | More ]
