I did HVAC earlier in my life. It is not that hard to do if somebody else is doing the work but retrofitting CA to a home WITHOUT tearing up a lot of walls or creating soffetts(sp?) all over the place can be really hard. It depends on the floor plan of the home in question. That said, there are new technologies which make it much easier to put a/c throughout a house without actually putting in central air. He seldom goes into his crib awake, though, sometimes drowsy and we pat his back until he's asleep and sometimes he nurses to sleep. Should we A) be happy with what we've got and stick with what we're doing or B) keep work on trying to get him to go into the crib wide awake b/c it's all going to go to hell in a handbasket soon? 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

my 13 month old is still nursed or rocked to sleep. i sort of think at 7 mo it wont' be easily resolved anyway so you can either try to fix it now if you must, or if it isn't bothering you, just keep doing it until it starts bothering you. fwiw, my dd (#1) was the same and one night she just didn't fall asleep when nursing at around 6 months and when i just put her in the crib to see what would happen, she was totally fine. now with db#2 this is not the case. I think with any childcare-giver, although they may heed your wishes, a huge frame of reference for how they deal with children is how they were raised. If they are older, from a different culture, etc., they may have very different experiences and norms for how children should behave, what they should be doing at certain ages, ideas about feeding and breastfeeding, etc., etc. [ Reply | More ]

having computer glitches here... wwyd if your child had an English teacher who assigned lots of vocab and tested on it, and fairly often had totally incorrect defs for words? I mean maybe 4 percent of the time, but that is enough. Some of the defs she gives are FAR off. Some are even the opposite of the real def. Then the students have to match the words with HER given defs on the tests for credit. Private NYC btw, middle school, 7th 8th grade English teacher. Should I tell the administration of the school? The kids with good vocabs know it is happening and are afraid to say anything to the teacher. [ Reply | More ]

it has been brought up directly by me (to the teacher) and I understand by others too, and her behavior does not change. I'm surprised the teacher is writing her own vocab tests. My dc's school uses Wordly Wise. I would talk to the head of the English department first, division head second. [ - ] Would you say anything to the administration if your dc's English teacher (middle school, NYC private) fairly often gave incorrect word definitions for students in her class to learn (for tests later). Some of the defs are moderately off, but for some she gives an almost opposite definition. Imagine, for example if your 7th or 8th grader came home with a def of "calm" (written out by the teacher) as a supposed def of "brusque." Seems like maybe 4% of her words have wrong defs and she assigns lots of vocab for the kids to learn, then gives exams which are multiple choice, match the word to (teacher's) definition. Kids need to answer wrong to get the credit, and those who know it is wrong are afraid to say anything. This is a 3rd/4th tier (according to UB) but they have plans to improve, are building the school in various ways. 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I did email her, pointed out one of the words. She said she would tell the students the correct def and then did not. I have heard reports of this from others, that the head of the division was told. Nothing has been done. The head of the division thinks people are "picking on" this teacher bc there have been an above avg number of complaints. Have heard the division head has some personal stuff going on in her life, and looks like the two hang out, and the relationship has crossed a boundary where the div head is no longer supervising this teacher. Of course this is all hearsay but I know from direct exp about the word defs, and I heard about it from another parent last yr. I am thinking of going to the head of the school. I think he likes this teacher as well though bc she comes from a prestigious school and looks good "on paper" which seems to be a high priority at the school these days. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, my DD either fusses and crescendos to a scream or immediately starts crying when laid down. I'm trying to figure out how to get her to soothe herself to sleep since she used to fall asleep after feeding but all of a sudden she no longer does, not sure why? I was able to get her to sleep in her buggy today since she likes laying quietly in there for walks - had to move it back and forth for a while and another time I hung a little mobile above her. Also got her to sleep in her crib for 30 min by constantly pulling the string of one of those musical crib toys (for ~15 min) [ Reply | More ]

^^ Check out this website http://www.babycareadvice.com It has some really good info about infant sleep cycles. We actually had our DD on pepcid for a while because we thought she had reflux, now I'm pretty sure it was just overtiredness. I noticed today that if DD gets cranky and I calmed her down and tried putting her down right away she never fell asleep. I had to do a little 5-10 min activity and get her laughing a little or interested in a toy. Then when she looked a little tired I put her down and that worked better, but not all the time. I think it helps to distract them a little so that they haven't been recently fussy. [ Reply | More ]

We have a 6mo and kind of let her schedule dictate our behavior. Some mornings she's up early, I bf her, dress her, play with her and then get going. When she sleeps late, dh gives her a bottle, changes her and he takes her to daycare. When she sleeps really late, dh just transfers her into her bucket car seat in her pjs and gives the lady at daycare her day clothes and bottle. One tip is to do as much as you can (lay out clothes, have bottle ready, etc.) the night before. Although it'll be crazy at first, it will become second nature. [ Reply | More ]
