Private in LA is much easier to get into (and cheaper). Issue is where you and/or your dh are going to work/live. traffic is key, so don't plan on living too far away from work or putting your child in a school that requires a long commute from home. LA Unified is generally poor with some notable exceptions, some of the idependent districts (SM, PP, Malibu) are okay but even the really nice districts can have tough middle schools. There is a book on Amazon (can't remember the name) that covers both private and public options and there are consultants out there. G&T and magnet schools are limited. [ Reply | More ]

My friend has a Beverly Hills PO but it's not Beverly Hills 90210. She said that the schools where she is are okay for elementary, but she is doing private since she liked a school and it worked out. She said it is hard for private - not as bad as NYC but still a big hassle. I don't think she mentioned anything like Hunter/G&T. I have heard of Harvard Westlake - maybe they post tuition? [ - ] SHARING-my 3 yo dd has an issue with it. when her friend(s) come over, she won't share her toys. she will pick out toys that she wants them to play with. when her friends want to play with what she is playing with, she will not give in and share. when she is over at her friends' house and finds a toy she likes, she will not give it up when the host friend wants to play with it. HELP!!! my dh and i share everything and show that we share but that has not had any effect on her. is this typical? and when she is with a friend who has just as much of a strong personality as her, they inevitably get into a fight. she seems to only play nice with friends who are more docile and give in. WTF? any tips on having her share? we have had so many talks with her. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

ask her to pick 3 things that she doesn't want to share and put them away then tell her that everything else you need to share but not to worry because sally or fred will not take any toys home etc. [ Reply | More ]

she needs to know that things are hers and that if she shares that she still gets to keep them. I was told not to intervene in the situations where the children both want a certain toy unless there is physical pushing, hitting, etc or if there is a stalemate where they both are pulling and neither is giving in - in that case take away said toy and give them both something else. This has worked so far. You may want to get creative with teaching her that sharing is fun. She will never learn to share out of the goodness of her heart if it's imposed upon her - three years old is a little young for that concept, but she'll get the hang of it if she has a good experience with sharing. A fat lady gets on, sits her butt on the handrail right next to 3yo dd. Then she offers to hold dd in her lap so her fat self can sit in her seat instead. I switched seats with dd so that fat lady would have to sit her butt next to me instead. Fat lady didn't have much room anymore so gets up, still miffed that I wouldn't let her sit & hold dd. Then another fat lady across from me says that I should hold dd in my lap and give up dd's seat for passengers. Was I unreasonable in not giving up my two seats in the corner or was I simply being attacked by resentful fat ladies? 97 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Then this fat woman sitting across the aisle starts lecturing me that I should sit and let dc stand since he will take up less room in the aisle and it will teach him to be a gentleman by standing. OP said they were coming from school. but who are you to judge the necessity of others' trips? maybe you should linger an hour later at work to reduce the rush hour load. do you really NEED to get home right away? [ Reply | More ]

how am i judging whether she needed a seat? i'm judging her rude behavior in sitting on a child just because she could, rather than expressing any actual ned she might have had. were YOU the fatty on the train? why are you her champion? [ Reply | More ]

I'm not her champion as much as I'm trying to be a voice of dissension in this crazy mob. It's funny to me that so many of the people here who are outraged by the "fat lady's" behavior will post tomorrow (or the next day) about how no one gave them a seat on the subway when they were pregnant. Guess why? Because so many women just look fat when they're pregnant! Maybe if we were all a little more understanding of other people on the train, it would be better for everyone. [ Reply | More ]

see next-to-last-post. i was on on subway and needed a seat, so i asked for one. there's no need to be understanding of of someone either passive-aggressively or merely uncaringly crushing a child. you need to sit, ask to sit. maybe if people didn't take their annoyance at a random parent they think has taken something they deserve out on a child it would be better for everyone [ Reply | More ]

if the fat lady was ill she should have said something -- not taken it upon herself to sit on top of a child just because she could. she wasn't shy about asking to hold a stranger's child on her lap -- if she had a need she could have mentioned it. [ Reply | More ]

Fat lady was trying to guilt OP into giving up the seat since she was an easy target. I'm sure there were plenty of other strapping young men in other seats who were even better candidates for giving up their seats, but she was not targetting them because OP was presumed to be more likely to fall for it. Aren't those 2 seaters the ones you're supposed to give up for people who are sick/disabled? Maybe the fat lady was (and was trying to accomodate both her need to sit and OP's kids). [ Reply | More ]

No indication of that in OP's post. FWIW, I have found that people who are disabled (or at least think they are more disabled than you are) tend to tell you so directly and ask for the seat. [ Reply | More ]

once when i was pregnant and standing on the subway i suddenly felt like i was going to puke/faint (equally) if i didn't get my head between my knees immediately. i asked the person sitting in front of me if i could have their seat, and they gave it to me. that's how it works. you don't just sit on someone's small child because you decide you want to. this is getting kind of ugly. Sounds like the overweight person wanted a seat like everyone else on the train, but once she got it she really wanted TWO seats (which she would have if OP let her hold her child). She got up because she couldn't get two seats together for one person. So yes, OP and her two kids [ Reply | More ]

A thin person can be obnoxious and try to spread their legs wide to take a 2 seats, but a good subtle shove or elbow usually gets them to move over. Can't do that with a morbidly obese person who is half in your seat since there's is nowhere else for the flesh to go. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] So our a/c is broken, getting fixed tomorrow, we had to go out to dinner; me, dh, ds (4), ds (1). Ds (4) is acting up horribly in resto, not staying in seat, not eating, not listening; then starts waving hand in front of my face, poking me on shoulder. Was asked to stop, was reprimanded repeatedly...finally, as he was waving his hand in front of my face yet again, I lost control -- and bit his finger. I have never felt worse in my life. I am totally not about corporal punishment, was spanked as a kid and vow never to do that. I feel terrible. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
