DS's kinder teacher is tutoring him this summer. He is at grade level but could use some help w/ reading & writing. And he doesn't work very well for/with me. He is very diligent & productive with his teacher and they have a great relationship. Transitions are hard for him and she wanted to make heading into first a little easier. If she hadn't offered though we probably would not have pursued it or looked for someone else to tutor him. [ Reply | More ]

We are thinking of a tutor for our 3rd grader. If you are in public school, one issue is that as long as your kid meets standards, he/she doesn't get much help to excel. So if your kid struggles a bit writing, for example, but is "okay", but you want him/her to get better, a tutor can help. I spend alot of time helping ds with homework, and I find I am not great at teaching -- I agree with posters who say many kids learn better from people not their parents. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] New here. I keep on reading about high ERB scores. So how many kids a year score 99x3? 99? 98? 95+? 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

99: my guess based on posts by UBers in the past couple of years (some claimed to have gotten # from ERB) is under 100 (which makes sense since SB is harder to get 99 and SB produces about 50-60 kids scoring 99 each year). Not sure about 98 but maybe double the number of kids getting 99 (which would be mathematically true but who knows). 95+? I'm guessing close to 1000. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, I am not disagreeing with you and wish it were the case with ds! As best I can figure he did miss a 99x3 by one point (low 99 performance, highest possible 98 for verbal, for 124 total and 125 appears to be a 99) [ Reply | More ]

OP: I'm not a math major, but I would think that beating 95% of the pool of 3000 would yield 150. What am I missing? It just seems from UB that more than 150 get 95+ and more than 30 get 99. Is there a school administrator in the houses to comment!?!?!? [ Reply | More ]

ERBS are normed *nationally*. Kids living in trailer parks or foster homes or with uneducated parents or developmental delays are included. The group of kids taking WPPSI--III for erb tend to have well educated parents, so you'll see more kids scoring in the top percentiles than you would if the group of test takers wasn't homogeneous. That is NOT true. If it is, then there were 150 kids who got 99 last year and no way there were that many. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, I wouldn't be shocked if it were 150 or more. If the SB gets 50-60, over twice as many people take the ERB, meaning probably at least 100 99's, and I'd bet there's up to 50 or so more easily since it's considered a (slightly) easier test. Manhattan has a ton of very highly educated (and presumably intelligent) parents, who tend to produce very high-scoring kids, esp. at this early age. [ Reply | More ]

I think the overlap is higher - alot of the 99x3 kids probably also got 99 on the SB. OLSAT was a different story. But I bet there's only a dozen or so who got 99x3ERB, 99 SB, 99 OLSAT. [ Reply | More ]
