Do you have a tutor because kid is a little behind or to supplement generally? I know someone who sees a tutor weekly--like getting a music lesson. Father says it's so that child gets one-on-one time to go over schoolwork and help move ahead. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Isn't that what the parents are for? I can understand if dc is in HS and taking high level classes, but for LS and MS, unless the parents are idiots, I don't see why you have to pay someone. [ Reply | More ]

Many parents work all day, come home at 7PM if they are lucky, and want to eat dinner etc. No time to tutor their kids even if they wanted to. And some kids (one of mine unfortunately) really learn better from strangers. [ Reply | More ]

Nope, luckily so far dc does really well without help, but if help was needed we'd definitely have to go outside looking for it. [ Reply | More ]

Between the dh and dw (assuming married), you can squeeze in 30 min a day. And weekends, too. [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, I don't think we could. For one dc, maybe. For all three of them, no way. [ Reply | More ]

But you're paying for a specific teaching skill that parents don't always have. [ Reply | More ]

DS's kinder teacher is tutoring him this summer. He is at grade level but could use some help w/ reading & writing. And he doesn't work very well for/with me. He is very diligent & productive with his teacher and they have a great relationship. Transitions are hard for him and she wanted to make heading into first a little easier. If she hadn't offered though we probably would not have pursued it or looked for someone else to tutor him. [ Reply | More ]

We are thinking of a tutor for our 3rd grader. If you are in public school, one issue is that as long as your kid meets standards, he/she doesn't get much help to excel. So if your kid struggles a bit writing, for example, but is "okay", but you want him/her to get better, a tutor can help. I spend alot of time helping ds with homework, and I find I am not great at teaching -- I agree with posters who say many kids learn better from people not their parents. [ Reply | More ]

ITA about the kids learn better from others. My son is doing Suzuki violin and I have to help him practice. All the little things I struggle to get him corrected during practice are gone when he is in the private lesson session. He is like a changed person. [ Reply | More ]
