Not so sure about price, but a doula is supposed to be there to care for the mother and baby and baby nurse is strictly for baby duties (no pun intended!) [ Reply | More ]

np: good definition. doula for mom, baby nurse for baby. Also, I think baby nurses often stay all night and are more expensive because they have some kind of nursing degree. [ Reply | More ]

Just to clarify, baby nurses do not actually have a nursing degree. They usually have training in infant CPR, and have attended a short training course in infant and child health. [ Reply | More ]

doula will do for you whatever you need: cook a meal, do laundry, in addition to baby-related needs. Mine was very helpful/encouraging with breast-feeding too [ Reply | More ]

Doula performs the functions that family women and community members used to. Supports you however you need/want. Is sometimes knowledgeable about lactation. Baby nurse takes away your baby and tells you what to do. [ Reply | More ]

"Baby nurse" seems to be a Jewish-American tradition, particularly in the Northeast. Doula is more a crunchy granola tradition. Roles tend to overlap, depending on person. (To previous ORs- baby nurses will cook, etc.) Main difference seems to be Baby Nurse is there to care for baby, Doula for mommy. But major overlap nonetheless [ Reply | More ]

i had that for a long time. I healed eventually, many years later. In retrospect, should have tried therapy. Probably, the problem is with your tendency to dwell on it (there are some unresolved issues from childhood, prior relationships... etc). What is done is done, cannot change the past. The issues now is avoid taking this baggage into your present and future. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Is summer almost over yet???? It is so damn hot. My 2 dc would stay at the playground for 8 hours if I let them. Feel guilty for wanting to "make" them go to the zoo or a museum since they love the playground do much. Camp is over and trying to find another one with openings in August for 2 weeks or so. Looking forward to Sept for school to start and to be able to get back on a routine. Anyone else? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm totally underutilized and want to do more. Have spoken to my boss about wanting to do more, but he doesn't come through. Should I approach boss's boss about additional work/special projects? We were checking out Cultural Care too. I saw a few disturbing stories about them on a new information site on au pair agencies (reviews of agencies, reports stories, au pair tips, etc.) at www.aupairclearinghouse.com. The VP of CC was interviewed there and gave a rebuttal to the story of sexual assault on one of their au pairs by a host father! Apparently a news reporter wrote about a cover up by the agency around this family and you can read the rebuttal here. Pretty good information site - book mark it if you have an au pair or you are thinking about hiring an au pair. [ Reply | More ]

What is what we did. Open House and spring tours all booked and couldn't go. I didn't know anyone who sent dc to Dalton, either. All I knew was that it was the most racially diverse TT and the only progressive TT and that's all I had to know. Also read it had a great arts/theater/creative programs. In the end, they want to know if your family really buys into their Dalton plan/progressive education and if your values mesh (strong emphasis on diversity, justice, etc.). [ Reply | More ]

That's the position we were in. But - it was the only school we interviewed at where the essay seemed to matter. Babby (DOA) had highlighted essay and referred to it in the interview. So, I would say spend extra time on that one and highlight why your child would benefit from a progressive education and the Dalton Plan (if you can figure out what it is). IMO it helps to have DC's ERBs submitted before child and parent interview. Although there was no rush to actually get the application in as interview spots were not limited. [ Reply | More ]

Same. Babby highlighted various parts of the essay and commented on them/asked for more info. Other schools - don't even seem to read anything you write, esp'ly SS schools (very little space for essay). Maybe bec it's a prog school, they really want to recruit kids who will be a good fit (self motivated, smart, curious) and parents who are supportive of prog ed'n. Try not to sound snobbish. It's a matter of personal preference I guess. We justed listed DC's interests in "special interests or abilities" section and none were exceptional (art, music, cooking). But we talked about those in our essay and interview. Dalton does its own "testing" at the 1 hr. child interview like many schools. [ Reply | More ]

Interviewers def. ask the kids about things you mention they like. If you say DC loves science or music they will ask DC what specifically they like to do or which instruments they like to play (ice breaker). Better to list off-beat true interest than list something you think sounds impressive (studying mandarin/knows how to say hello in seven languages). [ Reply | More ]
