Need work advice. Been slow at work for awhile. Part of problem is my boss is kind of lazy and takes off lots of time, deflects work onto other groups, so I'm not busy because he's not. I'm totally underutilized and want to do more. Have spoken to my boss about wanting to do more, but he doesn't come through. Should I approach boss's boss about additional work/special projects? Don't want to offend boss, but this is killing me and my career. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Network more around the office. Comment to whomever you can that you have capacity and would be happy to assist with projects. Volunteer whenever you get a chance. I wouldn't go to boss's boss b/c they may really tick off your boss. [ Reply | More ]

Great idea. Have done some of this. Problem seems to be my boss is not respected and folks who have more work don't want to deal with him in trying to use me. He's kind of hard to work with. Maybe I'll approach him about their projects and pray he doesn't get sullen and jealous?? [ Reply | More ]

I would keep your boss in the loop before you solicit work around him. Suggest you identify 2 or 3 "remedies" or approaches to address your underutilization issue and present them to him. You need buy-in. good luck... [ Reply | More ]
