No. And God forbid something happens, this is child neglect based on state LAW (most states age is 13 to be left alone). So in addition to whatever trauma/accident was experienced, you might have a run in with child and family services. [ Reply | More ]

I just researched it for 2 min...CA and NY do not have minimum age laws. Although consensus appears to be 12. I know that NC is 13. Here is a brief article from Syracuse NY about couple arrested for leaving three children at home and oldest was 9. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on maturity of the kid. I've left my oldest dd in charge of her brother starting at that age while I run across the street to the Deli but she is a remarkably calm kid & they are both watching TV anyway. Can you trust that the 8 yo will really be watching the 2 yo? Why don't you just take the baby & leave the other two? [ Reply | More ]

I went to her once at her 57th St practice and will not be back. She was nice enough, though a little condescending, during the exam, but the nurse who took my blood did not say one word to me and left me bruised for days. But the reason I'm really unhappy with her is that two weeks after my exam I was having horrible side effects from the birth control she put me on. I called about 5 times over the course of a week and a half, and I still have not gotten a call back from her. The receptionist repeatedly told me she would call me back and then told me at one point she would call in a new prescription for me. That never happened. I'm now forced to go to a new gynecologist just to get one prescription written. I'm going to try to get my medical records from Dr. Hanna's office so I don't have to have a 2nd annual exam in 2 months, but I'm not hopeful that her office will be able to provide them. [ - ] Can anyone explain how you apply to public middle schools (at least in Brooklyn). Do all schools admit you according to your test scores? Grades? 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]
NY Schools 07.23.08, 09:06 AM Flag
»
The system keeps changing, but it all happens during 5th grade. You tour middle schools and complete an application. You can apply to one of your district middle schools or a borough-wide program, usually those are for gifted and talented. There's usually a test score cut off for the best middle schools. Then, you rank the schools, and they accept based on test scores, schools grades, attendance. Hopefully dc gets first or 2nd choice. But in good elementary schools, the 5th graders get all kinds of guidance through this process, meetings for parents about this, etc., so it's not just up to you to figure out. [ Reply | More ]

OP: So grades don't matter, just test scores? So schools are completely tracked by testing ability? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.23.08, 10:39 AM Flag

No grades do matter -- the test scores are just a cut off, and aren't the basis of admission. But, it does seem as if the middle schools are tracked in a way. Kids who are stronger academically will be in the most desirable schools. For Hunter there's a separate test, and that is the sole basis of admission. I guess you can get bad grades and do well on the test and get in, although you have to get 4s on your 5th grade ELA/Math test in order to take the Hunter special test. [ Reply | More ]

We’ll be in the City during the first week of September, but plan to be out of town from the second week. I can help you. You need to call the schools the day after Labor Day and send in the applications soon after. They will then call you to schedule your interviews and you need to be around to schedule them. You can easily schedule them for after you are home, but I would check your home voice mail and return the calls from vacation. Bring a calendar so you can set up the appointments. [ Reply | More ]
