Do you have an 8 y.o. or older? Would you ever leave your 8 y.o. in charge of your 5 y.o. and 2 y.o. to drive 4 miles down the road, pick up lunch and drive back? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

no, I would take them with me. Might leave 8yo alone for that period of time, but not as a babysitter [ Reply | More ]

No. And God forbid something happens, this is child neglect based on state LAW (most states age is 13 to be left alone). So in addition to whatever trauma/accident was experienced, you might have a run in with child and family services. [ Reply | More ]

op: wow - i wouldn't leave the 8 y.o. myself (was wondering if i was paranoid) but i babysat regularly starting at age 11. 13 seems extreme. i'll have to check into our state law. [ Reply | More ]

I just researched it for 2 min...CA and NY do not have minimum age laws. Although consensus appears to be 12. I know that NC is 13. Here is a brief article from Syracuse NY about couple arrested for leaving three children at home and oldest was 9. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on maturity of the kid. I've left my oldest dd in charge of her brother starting at that age while I run across the street to the Deli but she is a remarkably calm kid & they are both watching TV anyway. Can you trust that the 8 yo will really be watching the 2 yo? Why don't you just take the baby & leave the other two? [ Reply | More ]

OP: i'm not considering doing it - was just wondering what others thought. i'm way too paranoid - what if i got into an accident while driving? that kind of worry. i have left my 8 and 5 y.o. alone while i walked the dog. i didn't feel relaxed, though. [ Reply | More ]

Never ever. I'd have my lunch delivered or else I'd open up cans from my emergency evacuate Manhattan bag if I had too if no food was in the house. Otherwise try Fresh Direct or similar food delivery service. [ Reply | More ]
