Little Red/Elizabeth Irwin(LREI) and Friends Seminary are both academically excellent. Friends is easily viewed as the more academically traditional, Little Red- definitely progressive(w/terrific structure), yet both have strong academics. Another progressive for consideration would be City&Country; Are you relating to the tier ratings in the pure sense of exmissions? [ Reply | More ]

Grace is an academic school with a developmental start. Formal reading isn't taught until first grade. I think the program is a good one and there are great teachers. The school places well, matching kids with appropriate schools. Visit the schools and see what you find. I would look for programs that seem a good fit for your child. Grace has very strong academics--my child learned more chemistry in 6th grade than I did in high school. There's a math club which has extra challenges for kids beyond what is taught in class. Arts are good also. Look under programs on the website for an idea of the work children do in the visual arts. The school has a good music program (you can listen to examples on the website--I think you hear the lower school singing when you click the Lower School link.) A number of children at the school join the boys or girls choirs of Grace Church, which is a fabulous program. [ Reply | More ]

Friends is the best downtown school overall. Solid academics and established program, also nice facilities. Grace Church is also good, but more traditional and only K-8. St. Luke's is also traditional but not quite as rigorous. Of the progressive schools, LREI is probably best, but it starts to weaken in the middle/high school when a lot of the higher-performing kids leave (I know this firsthand). VCS and C&C are nice schools but not very challenging academically. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] After 13 years together, DH has turned into a completely different person the past 4 months or so. He's in commercial real estate and his business has virtually dried up. I understand that he's having a difficult time, but the man I've known all these years has basically vanished. He barely registers that DD or I are even present in a room. Yesterday she asked why daddy was mad at us. I explained to her that he is just having a difficult time with work and that it's not anything about her. He is a walking black cloud of doom and gloom when he does speak and I'm starting to avoid even being at home (he works from home). I'm being as understanding as I can and have been cutting way back on everything to conserve our capital (we have plenty of savings to last for quite awhile) until things turn around. Am I being unreasonable in thinking that he should still be behaving as normally as possible? TIA for any thoughts. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Meet with the teacher or school administrator beforehand - teachers will need epi-pens etc. - most schools in my experience clearly post signs on classroom door indicating that there is a child with allergies and let the parents of other classmates know that there is a child w/allergies. There are "no nut" classrooms and even "no nut" schools. You may also qualify to get a SEIT who can attend specifically to make sure that your dc does not eat any potentially dangerous foods. At my child's camp, there are signs on the door saying "No food with peanuts allowed" "No strawberries" etc. Schools take allergies seriously. If they don't, change schools. [ Reply | More ]

I have the same situation and it is SO difficult to let go and send them to preschool. My daughter started last fall. I have found that the best thing for me to do is just to talk to the other parents. Once people have met me and my daughter and understand the situation, they usually go way out of their way to be careful. I've had several people make special birthday cakes so my daughter can enjoy the cake at a party. I was really surprised by that. Still, I quiz the school staff like crazy and they probably do think I'm the annoying overprotective mom. You probably will get a comfort level with this at some point, but not a day goes by that I'm not freaking out a little during snack time. Good luck to you! [ Reply | More ]

I think that you are the one who has to learn to live in the world of the otehr parents....your kid has to be taught not to share food, you have to send along a vegan dessert to birthday parties, you have to host your own playdates. You don't need to amke allies with the other parents. When your child has a playdate, make sure you communicate dc's needs clearly. As for school, they school with communicate with the other parents the schools food policy. The other parents will follow them. But you need to make sure you keep a supply of acceptable snacks for your dc at the school. You need to keep up with the calendar and make sure you bring an alternative treat when there will be parties and special events at school. You need to make sure that you teach your child not to eat anyone elses food. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with this. You shouldn't be approaching the other parents. And you shouldn't be limiting what the other kids have for snack either. You should supply all of the food for your child and the teachers should know to serve only that food to your child. Your child should be taught not to touch other children's food. But you can't insist that every child eat dairy free, egg free food. [ Reply | More ]

Pretty good as schools will not automatically put your application in the rejection pile. Your application will be looked at. By TTs. But too high for 3rd tier schools - meaning they will think you are not serious about them. If you apply to 3rd tier, you'd better first choice them, otherwise not much luck. If you FC a 2nd tier school with that score, very good chance that dc will be accepted. TTs - 97 is not too low but it's not great either. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know if there really is a science. DC got into some TT, got rejected by two, WLed at one, rejected at some 3rd & not at others. I think it is a numbers game & they are also looking at the composition of the class - so a dc might be rejected from one school & accepted at an equally good one, depending on what those particular schools are looking for. That's what I'm saying. High 90 score and you apply to TTs and 3rd tiers and see if 3rd tier will give you an accept. Either WL or rejects from 3rd tiers if you don't show strong interest (as in FC). [ Reply | More ]

Only 99s get a "serious" look. But 97 will be looked at same as 95/96/98 kids. Still good enough score at TTs. If dc aces playdate and parent interview goes well, plus PSD report is super, yes, TT is possible (though tougher for HM or Dalton as non sibs but still not impossible.) [ Reply | More ]

Before you snark, you realize how many hundreds and hundreds of kids have 96/97/98 scores? How many open seats do you think there are for non-sibs? Not enough to accept all those kids. [ Reply | More ]

It's nationally normed. If they norm to NY state or NYC, it could help. [ Reply | More ]

I am not sure what "interectual stimulation" is, but, while TTs are definitely academic, so are some of the schools that UB "poo-poos" Apply to TT, but look at other schools and keep an open mind. GL! [ Reply | More ]
