Who is they? Nobody gave me anything. Oh, actually my husband gave me a glass of wine, a bath, and a backrub. I got to the hospital and pushed my daughter out in 15 minutes. No need to medicalize the process unless there's some sort of problem!! [ Reply | More ]

You are making it sound like a night on the town. I agree that labor can be very overmedicalized but it sounds disingenuous to make it seem so breezy. [ Reply | More ]

My first was an emergency c, my second was like OR's. It's possible to have it be intimate and mostly at home, but hospitals don't want you to know that. -NP [ Reply | More ]

I don't know about intimate but sure - home births are possible for some people - probably not first time moms. My point is that its probably not going to a spa-worthy experience. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know anyone who got to the hospital in early labor who wasn't given at least some pitocin to "help it along." Unless you get there very fully in labor, you're getting the pitocin, ime. [ Reply | More ]

If labor is slow to progress and poses possible risks to mother or baby, pitocin is usually administered. It is true that the practices vary from practicioner and place; In some hospitals, it seems like a standard med, at times seemingly introduced to 'go quicker'. I've heard 'jokes about Sunday labors threatening to interfere w/an ob's tee-time and was present at my own- where the midwife completely understood and supported labor as a varying, natural process(within reasonable assessment of circumstances)and was patient. In many cases, midwives may not administer meds, so it would be necessary to transfer delivery to a doctor. Pitocin is also often administered post-placental delivery, to prompt the cervix to contract, as to prevent major bloodflow from the wound from placental detachment. I had a huge placenta, which bled profusely at the detachment site. Pitocin was suggested and I was given the right to refuse(which I did)and fortunately, all was well. [ Reply | More ]

major bleeding from the site of placental detachment. I had a huge placenta w/ my first, had heavy bleeding and Pitocin was suggested, yet I was lucky to be asked; I refused and fortunately all was soon well. Meds are a choice and you are right to be as informed as possible before you're in labor/delivery. Be sure to ask these questions of your practitioner. [ Reply | More ]

not sure- I was induced with my first and got it; with second dc the epidural stalled my labor, and they gave me pitocin to get it going again. So for me, yes, each time I got it. I had a 2 hour labor with first db and a 3.5 hour labor with second, fwiw, so no difficulty with pitocin. [ Reply | More ]

you can find a practitioner that won't if you don't want it. i found a midwife that didn't, however i needed it after over 50hrs in labor, for some it is not so breezy even when you do the wine/backrub natural thing, some babies won't come out like in my case [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I gave birth to DS last week. We have no family around so my neighbor came over and spent the night with our four year old girl. I'm wondering what would be an appropriate thank-you gift. [ - ] I'm a partner at a big firm and one of my partners (a good friend) has invited all the attorneys - including summer associates - to a shower/send-off for me. I feel weird about this, like I am grubbing for presents. This is my second dc - although the first was a girl 4.5 years ago and this one will be a boy, and we don't have that much stuff, but really . . . it's not like there's anything we need that I can't buy.
