they aren't slaves. They are supposed to work 45 hours a week. Surely if you are gone with dc for 1 day of a week that leaves 6 other days for them to make up those 45 hours of work....and they aren't supposed to work more than 10 hours in one day [ Reply | More ]

au pairs work 45 hours a week, that is the 'max' but some will agree to work more hours for extra pay. You might be able to find one willing to clean if you pay her extra for it...but to 'expect to find someone' would be a stretch [ Reply | More ]

I'm not being a cruella....if I were going to hire a housekeeper to clean and au pair asked if I would 'hire her' instead to clean, I'd consider it. They are supposed to get 1 day off a week, many families give 2 days off....I'm sure some find some 'off the books' jobs a few hours a week. Or they will babysit in their time 'off' for their host family for extra money. They only make $350 a week so if ours sits a Sat night at $10 an hour, she can make another $50 for the week. Her choice, she isn't forced to do it. I can hire another sitter, but if she wants to do it, why not let her [ Reply | More ]

when we were applying, dc was on multiple priority w/ls. some doas told us that we had a good chance, some said good chance after G&T placements. we did get in before G&T placements. I did not feel led on by the others since, I believe dc was high on the w/l, but they did not yet have a spot to offer. I think Friends probably did something similar (we did not apply there so I have no idea), but people did not take it well, or they did it with too many people. who knows. hardly a tragedy [ Reply | More ]

They were very sloppy on the interview process. Many people reported their file had not even been looked at. Others said they were asked obnoxious things such as whether they were zoned for a good public school. That kind of thing. Two years ago, they over extended offers and had to put in a whole extra K class! Last year, they had this "handwritten" note on the bottom of many many WL letters saying it was "meangful adn we hope to hear from you." Then they teased people along yet word is not a single spot was given to anyone on the "meaningful waitlist." The school has turned off a lot of would be lovers. [ Reply | More ]

it is not uncommon not to get in off a priority w/l. it is only meaningful if a spot opens up, and apparently it didn't. they were trying to be nice to the people they were hoping to accomodate. unfortunately it didn't work out. happens all the time at many schools. people were just particularly sensitive to friends last season. many were SO, and felt they had a shot, but didn't when all was said and done. but its not really the school's fault. all schools do this in anticipation of openings. We did not apply to friends, but like I said, it is not uncommon for schools to maintain priority w/ls. they are often quite encouraging to the few people they are hoping to get if a spot opens up. they do not want these people to be alienated if they do get in, so it is a fine line, as sometimes, a spot does not open for them. I think that people get too upset for nothing. a w/l is a w/l. even if a priority w/l, there needs to be an opening at some point to be offered a spot. we all hold onto those near hits, but it is what it is... But that just encourages them to believe they're entitled and you have to make an excuse. "That's a kind offer. I know that's what you'd like to do but it just doesn't work for us." Period. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Summer hours: I am a teacher and have a nanny year round. Do you think it is fair to ask nanny to do different hours during the year. (i.e. instead of 7:30-4:30 --- to do 10-7 or 11-8 if they are ok with it. Any thoughts? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm a teacher and my nanny works different and fewer hours in the summer. It's a higher hourly rate so she is cool with it [ Reply | More ]

what do you mean? higher rate? at night? We are gone for Aug. and giving her three weeks off. I think it is fair to say without abusing it, come a little later and stay a little later [ Reply | More ]

I would see if she would go for it. It makes sense for you, but might not for her if she has her own family. If you ever get a new nanny, I would make that one of the stipulations up front. [ Reply | More ]

oh- her children are grown. college and high school. She doesn't have a need to get home early. I thought it would be nice for her to come in later since she normally gets in so early. Maybe a fair cut off would be 10-7 or 11-7 and give her 1 less hour? She seemed ok with it but it looked like she wanted to say something. [ Reply | More ]

It is a reasonable request. But she may not be able to, especially if she has her own dc. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Need advice from those who have btdt. Dc (2.75 yo) needs to drop or change nap for preschool which goes 12:30-3pm. Fights naps anyway and sometimes won't fall asleep until 2/3pm anyway and nights become really late. But since I tried dropping the nap altogether has been a crankpot and prone to tantrums (not previously frequent), but nights are very early (11 hrs of sleep). I have also tried giving in to a nap at 3pm for 45-60 min but that hasn't helped the tantrums and crankiness. Anyone have a good solution or do I just have to ride out the crankiness until the new schedule becomes routine? 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

between 6:30-7:30, and there's no way he'll go to sleep at 11am...with the same wake up time he wouldn't nap until somewhere between 1:30 and 2:30. [ Reply | More ]
