Do kids go to sleep away camp anymore? I did but I don't hear many others doing it except some of the Jewish families I know. I think it's a great thing that can help a kid become more self sufficient. What do people think of sleep away camp? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It's where we jews teach have our children indoctrinated in all the ways we rule the world (banking and entertainment etc). Also, it's nice for the kids not to have to hide their tails and horns for 4 weeks. If we let non-jews in then they'll have to keep wearing hat to hide the horns! [ Reply | More

my camp was full of sluts fun sluts but sluts and there was quite a bit of drinking and pot on our weekends off. it's not often a 17 yo gets away from mom and dad for a summer of fun! [ Reply | More

My child is young, but I don't see sleep away camp as a definate in our future. We did not grow up here - and sleepaway camp was not a part of summer life. While I see nothing wrong with sleepaway - I certainly don't belive it is necessary in fostering self sufficiency. Millions of self sufficient adults manage w/o that particular experience. I grew up in California where sleep away was not the norm but my kids are NYers and thought they're starting late (as a tween and a teen) they both decided to go this year. Even with work to keep me busy it's gonna be WEIRD. [ Reply | More

My 10 yr old loves sleep away camp (just came back from 2nd time) and the 8 yr old can't wait to go next year. I went a couple of summers and thought it was awesome. We only sent the kids for a week though. I think I might be able to deal with 2 weeks as they get older but I don't think I could hang with 4 wks (but I am now a SAHM, working would probably make a big difference) [ Reply | More

I know tons of kids going, but they are Jewish. In my town only the Jewish kids really went. It's so fun and I spent all year looking forward to it, but I don't think it necessarily makes you self sufficient b/c every second of your day is planned... it's like the military there (in a gentle way), staying home probably forces you to be more creative in occupying yourself.
