No. Au pairs will pick up the dc's rooms, do their laundry, cook for them, and clean up their dishes. But they can't do non dc related housework. [ Reply | More ]

i think that the agencies really keep tabs on what they are doing for the families. they are supposed to be there for the kids. probably some visa issue. [ Reply | More ]

Correct. It is a visa issue. [ Reply | More ]

Because they have visas specific to childcare. [ Reply | More ]

how much money do they usually make a week? what if you are taking dc out for the day? why can't they clean? [ Reply | More ]

Because they are in the US on visas to do childcare. They can't work as accountants, they can't work as landscapers, and they can't work as housekeepers. They can do childcare. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think the State Department really cares whether or not you take your dc out for the day. [ Reply | More ]

they aren't slaves. They are supposed to work 45 hours a week. Surely if you are gone with dc for 1 day of a week that leaves 6 other days for them to make up those 45 hours of work....and they aren't supposed to work more than 10 hours in one day [ Reply | More ]

If someone is going to live and work in my house, they are going to do whatever work I give them. It's that simple. [ Reply | More ]

then you wouldn't go through the au pair program. it is a specific visa for 45 hours of child care and a culteral exchange program. it's not just a young, foreign nanny. [ Reply | More ]

au pairs work 45 hours a week, that is the 'max' but some will agree to work more hours for extra pay. You might be able to find one willing to clean if you pay her extra for it...but to 'expect to find someone' would be a stretch [ Reply | More ]

if agency finds out you are giving them non-childcare work to do, they will pull the au pair out of your house. stop being such a cruella! [ Reply | More ]

I'm not being a cruella....if I were going to hire a housekeeper to clean and au pair asked if I would 'hire her' instead to clean, I'd consider it. They are supposed to get 1 day off a week, many families give 2 days off....I'm sure some find some 'off the books' jobs a few hours a week. Or they will babysit in their time 'off' for their host family for extra money. They only make $350 a week so if ours sits a Sat night at $10 an hour, she can make another $50 for the week. Her choice, she isn't forced to do it. I can hire another sitter, but if she wants to do it, why not let her [ Reply | More ]

that's different from the post who said "If someone is going to live and work in my house, they are going to do whatever work I give them. It's that simple." My comment meant for that cruella. [ Reply | More ]

But that would be in violation of her visa. [ Reply | More ]

Where do they make $350 per week? We pay the state department required $160 per week. [ Reply | More ]
