i know a partner at a law firm and he is kind of crazy about this but i'm sure that this is not a big deal. i'm sure 80% of nannies are paid off the books in the city. [ Reply | More ]

because, presumably, you earn well, have a pension and health insurance. Your undocumented worker is unlikely to be able to answer yes to any of these. [ Reply | More ]

Well, yes dear, you are exploiting that person's inability to get a minimum wage job at least with some workplace protections. You are contributing to a culture of exploitation of the undocumented. And, golly, it's against the effing law! [ Reply | More ]

So sponsor an immigrant or employ someone who's here legally. Either way, if you're in the legal profession, you'd best do it legally. That means taxes and legal work hours (overtime after 40 hrs). [ Reply | More ]

technically you are an officer of the court. non-technically, yes, but don't withdraw money on a consistent basis so it looks suspicious. [ Reply | More ]

i used to nanny years ago for a lawyer in dc. i was on the books. you can be disbarred for that sort of thing if you get caught. and she wasn't willing to risk it [ Reply | More ]

I've NEVER heard of someone being disbarred for paying an employee legal or not off the books. It violates the rules of ethics, but people are not even censured for significantly greater ethical violations than that such as not fully disclosing evidence, not disclosing witness tampering. (Former AZ prosecutor BTW) [ Reply | More ]

that's what she told me. and we also have a babysitter who we have on the books - my husband is a lawyer and he said he could be disbarred if this was found out and he could lose his green card. i guess for the woman i nannied for and for my husband it is not worth for them. [ Reply | More ]

having an illegal nanny means that you are paying them off the books right? and there for that means you aren't paying taxes. and not paying your taxes on a legal or illegal worker is against the law. maybe you studied a different type of law in AZ [ Reply | More ]
