I'm a partner at a big firm and one of my partners (a good friend) has invited all the attorneys - including summer associates - to a shower/send-off for me. I feel weird about this, like I am grubbing for presents. This is my second dc - although the first was a girl 4.5 years ago and this one will be a boy, and we don't have that much stuff, but really . . . it's not like there's anything we need that I can't buy. What would you do? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

definitely tell the summer associates that it is not mandatory to come and or give you a gift. I know first hand that we feel like we have to do everything. [ Reply | More ]

I would try to politely ask the inviter (your friend) to spread the word that it is really a send off and not a shower and that no gifts are expected. Seems weird to have even regular associates bring you gifts. [ Reply | More ]

I would tell the partner that you would much prefer an intimate gathering. If she is a good friend, hopefully she won't be offended. [ Reply | More ]
