Can anybody categorize downtown schools? Which ones are 2nd tier and 3rd tier? Friends Seminary, Grace Church, Little Red, VCS, St. Lukes, etc? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

None of them are 2nd tier (ST Anns, ECFS, NBS, ST B, and maybe Riverdale). They are all 3rd tiers. [ Reply | More ]

Are you looking for traditional or progressive schools? Are you comfortable with Episcopal and Quaker schools? What kind of academics are you looking for? [ Reply | More ]

Little Red/Elizabeth Irwin(LREI) and Friends Seminary are both academically excellent. Friends is easily viewed as the more academically traditional, Little Red- definitely progressive(w/terrific structure), yet both have strong academics. Another progressive for consideration would be City&Country; Are you relating to the tier ratings in the pure sense of exmissions? [ Reply | More ]

Grace is an academic school with a developmental start. Formal reading isn't taught until first grade. I think the program is a good one and there are great teachers. The school places well, matching kids with appropriate schools. Visit the schools and see what you find. I would look for programs that seem a good fit for your child. Is there an area or subject in which you are particularly interested? [ Reply | More ]

Grace has very strong academics--my child learned more chemistry in 6th grade than I did in high school. There's a math club which has extra challenges for kids beyond what is taught in class. Arts are good also. Look under programs on the website for an idea of the work children do in the visual arts. The school has a good music program (you can listen to examples on the website--I think you hear the lower school singing when you click the Lower School link.) A number of children at the school join the boys or girls choirs of Grace Church, which is a fabulous program. [ Reply | More ]

LREI is not good academically unless it's changed a lot in teh last two years. Friend's kid went there and left because the child was learning so little. LREI also didn't catch kid's reading LD. Now kid is in a public and learning more and happier. It's a nice place, but not a lot of learning is going on. [ Reply | More ]

Conventional wisdom is that the top DT schools are Friends Seminary and Grace Church. If you add in the BH schools, then Saint Ann's (for the right child) and Packer. Next level is LREI and St. Luke's. [ Reply | More ]

Friends is the best downtown school overall. Solid academics and established program, also nice facilities. Grace Church is also good, but more traditional and only K-8. St. Luke's is also traditional but not quite as rigorous. Of the progressive schools, LREI is probably best, but it starts to weaken in the middle/high school when a lot of the higher-performing kids leave (I know this firsthand). VCS and C&C are nice schools but not very challenging academically. [ Reply | More ]

downtown isn't a real tier place. if you want tiers, suggest you stay uptown. schools are all good, different in many ways. tour and decide for yourself. [ Reply | More ]

Grace, Friends, LREI, and then all of the others are the same group. Grace and LREI have pre Ks which fill up w/ sibs so not many spots for outsiders except for "exceptional" kids in both k and preK. [ Reply | More ]

grace and st lukes are both great traditionals. lrei and city and country both progressive. lrei kind of lost its way in recent years. c&c pretty good. Friends is sort of between the two. considered a very good school. only lrei and friends go to 12th, though grace has a contingent of parents looking to build a 9-12 school. not sure where that is. Friends parent: If academics is very important you should know Friends starts very slow...till end of middle school. Parents who wanted lots of reading, writing and math often complain the first four years. End of middle and High School are extremely academic. Good art program. [ Reply | More ]
