[ - ] this sahm/wohm thing is such a stupid trap. Most moms will work at some point. You don't have to justify it or feel bad about it. If you never have to work when you are a parent, good for you. But don't turn it into a cause. 11 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

no, that's not what's strange. it's messed up that we live in a culture where women can't say "I work because we need the money," if that's the reason. I know that's not always the reason. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, plenty of people admit they work b/c they need the money. Maybe you're just not talking the right women. But of course, some of us do it for both reasons. We need my income, but I would work anyway-- it's part of who I am. I think it's funny when people can't seem to accept that, as if it's so unnatural for a woman to want more than household duties. [ - ] I'm having a problem with my 6yo dd. Usually she eats a good breakfast -- a big bowl of cereal with milk and bowl of berries. This morning, she said she wanted to start with only the berries. So I gave that to her, she ate it, and then she left the table. I asked her when she was going to come back to the table to eat the rest of her breakfast. She said "X" told me a good trick -- when you are hungry, eat a little and then wait 5 minutes. Chances are you won't be hungry anymore. I was floored! You need to know that my dd is very skinny. She is 44 inches tall and weights less than 40 pounds. You can see this kids ribs! The friend who told her this is a little chubby, but she is six! I know it is a good weight loss trick, but my dd needs to gain weight, not lose. I told her that she needs to eat to have energy for school. She told me she doesn’t want to get fat. I told her she is skinny and didn't need to worry about getting fat -- she needs to worry about being healthy and part of being healthy is eating a lot of good, healthy food. I am going to talk to her teacher tomorrow at drop off to make sure she is eating lunch and snacks at school. She does eat a good dinner, but now I'm concerned that she is hungry for dinner b/c she is starving herself during the day. 29 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

i'd explain that different people have different eating habits. some people tend to eat too much b/c they don't wait for their bodies to realize they are full. but that if she hasnt' even eaten one serving yet, then that's too soon to just eat a little and then wait. if she wants to do that after one serving but before having seconds, then that's ok. You can't get an OT evaluation done by a developmental ped. It has to be done by an Occupational Therapist. This is extremely helpful in learning how to change yourself/behavior in order to help your child learn to deal with special issues-like sensory integration. GL [ Reply | More ]

With a young kid, often parents are self-referring (peds rarely catch this stuff). Or, a preschool teacher might notice that a child has sensory issues in the classroom and mention it to the parent. [ Reply | More ]

I'm aware of that. Was wondering what OP's situation is. When I taught I would never tell a parent to go directly to OT without having an overall evaluation. I think it's really important to have someone with a broader perspective of child development do initial eval. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.22.08, 01:54 PM Flag
»
But the wait can be extremely long for a dev ped, so the best course of action is to get a CPSE eval going. Also, an OT issue doesn't necessarily translate into a broader disorder, so it may be jumping the gun to go to a dev ped unless the OT eval has shown that there are issues. Hopefully the parent will ask for a full eval in each domain, if she has worries in more than one area. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.22.08, 01:56 PM Flag

NP: IMO, get the OT eval, but I'd still see a dev. ped as well. An OT is not versed in all areas and will not know if there's more to the picture. [ Reply | More ]

Most families I've worked with as a teacher start with a general evaluation with a developmental psychologist who then sends them to OT, PT, speech, what have you. I think that's the best approach. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that in an older child you are right to start with a psychological because there are already issues with learning. But for kids 4 and under you're best off with EI/CPSE and a developmental ped, to get the broadest possible view. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.22.08, 01:48 PM Flag

But the EI starts with an evaluation by a dev. psychologist in the NY board of Ed. I should have clarified that families I worked with either did EI through the BOE or hired their own dev. psychologist (or the private nursery provided one). This was for kids 3 and up. I guess peds probably do deal with the younger ones. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.22.08, 01:52 PM Flag

Where are you getting your info? EI doesn't start that way at all. EI starts with individual evals from speech, PT, and OT therapists, as well as from an educator. Many EI kids don't get an eval from a psychologist at all - usually only if an EI dev ped is not available, because they are a lesser choice. Are you sure you don't mean a developmental pediatrician? When I worked in low income schools, the first eval. was always with a psych. (head start). When I worked in a tt, the first eval. was generally with a psych. hired by family. It's just an annecdotal, not conjuring information. [ Reply | More ]

That is definitely not what I'm used to! Interesting to hear about different methods. Most of the people I know started in EI, but those who started at CPSE always did the eval while waiting to get into a dev ped. No one ever goes to a psych. At 4, you see a neuropsych for a psycho-educational eval, but it's not the same. [ Reply | More ]
