I'm having a problem with my 6yo dd. Usually she eats a good breakfast -- a big bowl of cereal with milk and bowl of berries. This morning, she said she wanted to start with only the berries. So I gave that to her, she ate it, and then she left the table. I asked her when she was going to come back to the table to eat the rest of her breakfast. She said "X" told me a good trick -- when you are hungry, eat a little and then wait 5 minutes. Chances are you won't be hungry anymore. I was floored! You need to know that my dd is very skinny. She is 44 inches tall and weights less than 40 pounds. You can see this kids ribs! The friend who told her this is a little chubby, but she is six! I know it is a good weight loss trick, but my dd needs to gain weight, not lose. I told her that she needs to eat to have energy for school. She told me she doesn’t want to get fat. I told her she is skinny and didn't need to worry about getting fat -- she needs to worry about being healthy and part of being healthy is eating a lot of good, healthy food. I am going to talk to her teacher tomorrow at drop off to make sure she is eating lunch and snacks at school. She does eat a good dinner, but now I'm concerned that she is hungry for dinner b/c she is starving herself during the day. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

^^^my dd is 8yr old and there have been girls saying things about weight in school but I have taught her that I don't lie to her. She has nothing to worry about and eating healthy includes eating fat and full meals [ Reply | More ]

Op here -- I'm trying not to be offended by your post, but I can't help it. It sounds like you are saying my dd thinks I lie and that it's my fault my dd listens to kids at school. I think my dd is pretty normal and most kids listen to their friends. [ Reply | More ]

you took my post the WRONG WAY. I am telling you about me and my dd and what I tell her. I never said you lie..I said my dd takes my word for it and I have taught her that mom is not going to lie to you so don't believe your friends when it comes to this eating issue [ Reply | More ]

OP should be more worried about teaching her dd to have self-esteem and assurance rahter than food issues. [ Reply | More ]

She didn't eat anything else, if that's what you mean. But she was busy playing with her brother and I have noticed that my kids won't eat when they are busy unless they are famished. [ Reply | More ]

i think it is fine if she was satisfied, honestly, it seems kind of arbitrary to say that she should eat some specific amount. i would guide her towards the cereal with milk first though and give her berries if still hungry [ Reply | More ]

as I said below, the problem is that I think she is purposely trying to eat as little as possible, rather than eating until she is truely satisfied. [ Reply | More ]

Even if she is skinny now, it's not a good idea to teach her she has to finish her food. Eating until you aren't hungry is the better way. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's a healthy perspective if the goal is to eat in moderation until you are satisfied not full and if the emphasis is health vs. weightloss. [ Reply | More ]

my concern is that she is very skinny and now I think she is trying to eat as little as possible, instead of eating what her body would normally tell her to eat. [ Reply | More ]

It seems like she is used to eating what you've set out for her, which is not what her body needs. If she eats is satisfied for the moment, then that is what she needs. She can have small meals. [ Reply | More ]

As I said in my original post, she is extremely skinny. And now she is telling me that she is going to limit her food and thus will get even skinnier. She is using a trick that people use to lose weight, but she is under weight to begin with! [ Reply | More ]

So set her straight about the goal (weight loss) but the actual technique seems very healthy to me [ Reply | More ]

np: ita but doesn't sound like OPs dd was eating until full. Sounds like she was eating a little like her friend taught her [ Reply | More ]

True, but she certainly doesn't need to trying to eat as little as possible, as it seems here! [ Reply | More ]

If she were truly hungry, she would have asked for more. She was satiated. [ Reply | More ]

However, it may teach her healthy eating in the long run. Are you overweight btw? Do you have the view that food is love and that you should eat up? [ Reply | More ]

Not at all. Size 4. We all actually eat very healthy in my family. Honestly, when you read about what you should feed your family, we are right on target. [ Reply | More ]

i'd explain that different people have different eating habits. some people tend to eat too much b/c they don't wait for their bodies to realize they are full. but that if she hasnt' even eaten one serving yet, then that's too soon to just eat a little and then wait. if she wants to do that after one serving but before having seconds, then that's ok.
