[ - ] spending the weekend at my mom's smallish house on Long Island. My mom smokes 3-4 cigarettes a day and today it really bothered me-- ds has a bad cold and I have a scratchy throat. I asked her if please she could smoke outside for tonight and she totally blew up at me--"When did you become such a puritan??" I'm really upset. Wish we could leave tonight. 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

you kind of cannot dictate what your mother does at her own house. next time invite her to your place, then you can have her smoke outside, but unfortunately you are on her turf. [ Reply | More ]

she lives in a house on Long Island and we live in an apt...I know I can't MAKE her not smoke, but you think it's really unreasonable to ask that she smoke outside for the maybe 48 hours per month we're here? [ Reply | More ]

it's totally reasonable, but since it's her house, it's also -- technically, anyway -- reasonable for her to refuse. i wouldn't stay there again if it were me. and, i would leave now and go to a hotel. what is wrong with her? [ Reply | More ]

lighten up, francis. if you live in NYC you're breathing worse than 3-4 cigarettes every time you leave your apartment. [ Reply | More ]

Three or four cigarettes is not making your child sick or bothering your throat. I agree with her that you're being a Puritan. [ Reply | More ]

totally disagree. just one cigarette bothers many people. me, for example. but even if it didn't, i simply wouldn't allow it around my kids. when our parents grew up it was a different era. nowadays, knowing what we know, how could we not be bothered by this, even if only on a gut level? trick is to pay for 1st kid for the first year and be very involved with the school. helps if your kid is a good student and the school likes him. then you get aid for the next ones. [ Reply | More ]

never thought of that. I figured if school knew you could offered 1st tuition they might not give you aid for others. guess I was wrong [ Reply | More ]

No, what the younger sibs don't know won't hurt them. don't take older kid out of school because the sib didn 't get aid. As i said if you are really part of the school community the school will do their best to keep you. A lot of these schools have a lot of $ to give, you just have to ask. [ Reply | More ]

Teacher here: I like GCs (b/c even if I don't love the store, I can find something or use the GC for a gift) or cash. I find Visa and AmEx gift cheques/cards to be a PITA -- store clerks are not always sure how to ring them and they can't be used online. (I'm being honest -- but, of course, I am grateful for all gifts, no matter what the form!) [ Reply | More ]

CASH CASH CASH. Cash may seem tacky but at the end of the day, they want hard cash. AMEX gift checks- you have to pay a fee i think 10%...i think the teachers would rather get the cash rather than have you fork over the fee to amex. [ Reply | More ]

It's normal, esp. between about 4pm and 8pm. She's still so tiny and her stomach is so tiny that it empties very quickly. It will get better as she gets bigger and her stomach can hold more so she can go longer between feedings. [ Reply | More ]

Contented Little Baby book by Gina Ford, which was recommended by my childbirth instructor who was a maternity nurse, has detailed schedules for the first year. While I didn't follow them strictly, it was helpful to give me some guidance and to anticipate small changes in feeding, sleeping, and devleopmental as DB got older. When my DD was a newborn I gave her baths earlier in the evening and tried to put her to bed by 7/7:30 (albeit she slept for 2-3 hours before the next feeding), but I tried to create a bedtime ritual anyway so that by the time she was 12wks, which is when their sleep becomes more regular and consolidated in the evening, it wasn't totally new to her.
