[ - ] If you live in NYC at what age did you (or do most) allow dc to stay alone in apt or walk/take subway alone in City? 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It depends on the the DC. Most families I know - between 10 and 12 for staying home alone for more than 15 or 20 minutes (between 8 - 10 for "I'm going to the deli, don't let anyone in" trips). Also between 10 and 12 for walking to/from school, a little older for subway. [ Reply | More ]

I have a 10 and a 13 year old and don't agree. No one walks to school until mid-6th grade, which is 12, and many not until later. 2 13 yo's I know have ever taken the subway alone, and only because they live far from school. Staying home alone for a few minutes starts at 10, but for 30 minutes or more, at least 12. [ Reply | More ]

You have to know your dc, but 11 for walking to school,12 for taking the subway (easy, no change trips) and 11 for staying home alone for longer perods of time. [ Reply | More ]

home along for a run to the deli, around 9. most kids start going to school on their own when they start middle school, which is 11. most kids travel in groups on the bus. alone on the bus or subway varies greatly and really depends on parents situation. those that did it early (11, 12) did so because they didn't have a choice [ Reply | More ]

aw poor baby. if she gets congested, you can try a drop of saline in each nostril. sometimes, that's enough for her to sneeze out and clear up. if not, you can use a aspirator after the drop. [ Reply | More ]

NP: but it's her house. You've always known that she's a smoker, so if it's that important to you, stay in a hotel. A guest doesn't get to dictate how their host behaves in their own home. [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't matter. It's not your house, you don't get to make the rules. If you are in someone else's home, even your parent's home, you can dictate the behavior of your own children, including what they get to eat, but you do not get to tell other adults how to behave. If you don't like what they are doing, you leave. Even at your parent's house. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't wait until I got there--when she tendered the invitation, I'd probably say, "We should stay in a hotel because I'm uncomfortable with you smoking around the kids." if staying in a hotel is not an option, then just say you can't make it. why do you have to tell her why? say it's a difficult time to travel with the kids, and invite her to stay with you instead. and, at your home, you can insist she smoke only outdoors. [ Reply | More ]

np: y'know, that sounds awful. you have every right to put the health of your children first. if she can't understand that, I don't think she deserves the time with them. it sounds to me like she's more interested in proving some point about herself being the victim here than spending time with you all anyway. why do I say this? because my own mother is insane (although in very different way). anyway, i wouldn't put up with it. good luck. it is a god send you are so so so lucky! i would do the 5 minutes for a while, she'll eventually skip it, my db finally just skipped the meal when he didn't need it, slept through it. if she continues past 16 weeks or so you'll just end up soothing her with a pat on the back instead of the breast, the first night is not fun but they get it quickly and will just sleep through once they are not fed at that age. there is no one size fits all answer to this. i fed my daughter at night for many months because she was just fairly high need and it was the best way for us all to get some sleep. when we added a bottle, my husband took over that feed. and one day, it just kind of stopped. [ Reply | More ]

eta. Even the weisbluth acknowledges that breast fed babies may need to eat during the night up to 9 months. SO 10 weeks is way, way to early to expect a breast fed baby to sleep through the night. If they do - great - but do not actively "stop" the feeding. The only active thing I would do is see if a pacifier works. [ Reply | More ]

Babywise has been called very harmful by many other authorities on the subject. I totally sympathize with the lack of sleep, but only in America in 2008 would parents be so obsessed with controlling their children's sleep and getting them on a schedule. They're babies, people. Relax and go with the flow a little more. Find a way to work it out that isn't abandoning your kid! [ Reply | More ]
