[ - ] Selling our apartment without a broker, don't want to have an open house this weekend b/c of travel/kids. Should I post on Craigs list FSBO, appointment only or just wait until next week and do NYtimes and Craigs list when we can do an open house too? Any other places to post 25 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Maybe in NYC the market will withstand it. FSBOs in the burbs are just sitting there, no one wants to deal with a greedy owner when there is so much on the market. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that you can't be greedy. FSBO should give the flexibility to sell at a much lower price. I did FSBO in the burbs after 4 months with a broker and sold the house in a month. [ Reply | More ]

it's a joke...I mean come on....if there was some real proven "plan" it could be implemented in failing schools and kids who were otherwise destined to a life of drugs and crime on the streets would suddenly be college bound. The plan isn't so much about education as it is who they will admit (and kick out) in the first place [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.28.08, 05:55 PM Flag
»
This is completely absurd. The Dalton Plan is about involving the child in the education process, by working together with the student to formulate courses of study. It has nothing whatever to do with fixing failing schools. It pre-supposes a motivated student. [ Reply | More ]

Gee, I hope not. I didn't mean to -- I wanted to point out that the Dalton Plan was something that the school uses as a teaching and learning strategy that is effective, but has nothing to do with failing schools or saving people from a life of crime and drugs on the street. It's for the population of eager learners they have at their school. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.28.08, 06:41 PM Flag

Whether my child could get into to Dalton or any other school is irrelevant to whether I think that a young child having the option to pursue those things that interest him or her most would be a good idea. I think a Dalton education would be terrific for my child, but I doubt that opportunity will present itself. [ Reply | More ]

From what I understand it, the student is able to conduct research (in higher grades, of course), is more self-paced, and spends more time one on one with the teacher who can address more in-depth things he/she can't cover generally in class. Progressive education generally allows you to go in depth with fewer topics while traditoinal education allows you to cover more topics but not in depth. [ Reply | More ]

My child in another school has a weekly open period where she can schedule meetings with teachers to go over classroom material that she may not understand or need more help with. Private school teachers have lighter teaching loads than public school teachers in general--a school of 400 kids may have 4 or 5 full time science teachers, for example.. [ Reply | More ]

the Dalton plan is a philosophy that each child should be an active learner. This is accomplished by giving long term assignments (similar to a syllabus) giving the child ample time during the day to meet with teachers in the "lab" to enhance the classroom learning experience and by providing them with a home base (house) in which to feel comfortable and to have one teacher to be their primary contact. There is a lot of freedom (more as the kids get older) to integrate things they are interested in into their studies of specific subjects. So no, your 6 year can't choose to study pokemon, but in studying greece, he could look specifically at sculpture (if he is artistically inclined) or mythology, (if he prefers fantastic stories) etc. [ Reply | More ]
