Apparently the OP (and several other responders) believe that it's just fine to stay on a swing for an unlimited amount of time even when others are waiting - and that those who believe otherwise are "entitled". A little pot/kettle, imho. [ Reply | More ]

I am the OP from the swing post and I specifically wrote that the child swinging was NOT on for an excessively long time. So, there was no reason the child could not continue to wait. There is a big diff. The child swinging was just doing what you are supposed to be doing on a swing. Not abusing it. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, it's overbearing to ask because you should have manners and just wait. Do you just cut to the front of the line at the store because you want to? Same thing with the park. You teach your kid patience and it will go a long way. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Listen I would agree with you if it were anywhere but Central Park. There are 100s of children in and out all day and honestly, there has NEVER been an unavailable swing. So if a little girl is waiting for a very specific swing, it would make a whole lot more sense for her mom to tell her to wait patiently, or to get her over that weird swing fetish. We have tons of available swings..thats why it is so weird. [ Reply | More ]

But again, in Central Park, this little girl will have a very hard time if she always needs one particular swing. A better lesson for her would be that sharing in Central Park means trying out all sorts of new swings and swingsets because if every child wanted a turn on one swing, the city would fall apart...No really. for me, the issue isn't what's reasonable for this child to want. the question was whether or not the other mom was being overbearing and if asking is the same as demanding. and i think the answer to both is no. why would you think the answer is yes? and secondly, just b/c someone is asking does not mean your child has to say yes. even if it was a demand, your dc does not have to listen to some other kid's demands. i don't think it's really relevant. for two reasons. if the kid walked up and found someone on the swing, she has no idea how long the swinger has been swinging. and secondly, there is nothing wrong with asking. teach your children to take their turns and then share, adn then this whole thing wouldn't even be an issue. my mom did this with all our home videos from our childhood and they are nice and clear. They were from the little tapes, not big VHS tapes though. she had a guy do it and he edited them and everything, added music to the sports montages, etc. some of its kind of cheesy, but we all appreciate having those memories preserved in a way we can actually watch. [ - ] to the parent with the ADD 5 yo - Yes, teach him to read. Parents who tell you not to teach your child to read are invariably parents who did not teach their children to read. My mother taught me to read at 4, and I taught my child at 3 and a half. It was a huge advantage for him. He loved reading; became a great reader; entered school with great confidence; was immune to any instructional deficiencies of his teachers or curriculum; developed writing skills early, also; has a great vocabulary; never got as hooked on video games as other children; and impressed his teachers from the beginning, which is helpful in school. If your child is ready to learn - and he sounds like he is - you should ABSOLUTELY teach him to read. Especially since he's ADD, anything you can do to give him a head start, is smart, responsible parenting. I prefer phonics to Teach Your Baby system, which seems to me to work better with babies than preschool kids. But you could also do both. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

NP: I like you. You should read the earlier post where _all_ of these parents were telling this poor woman not to teach her toddler to read. Ridiculous. I learned at 4 in preschool. np: I don't think I could teach my kids incorrectly. I just think it's not important to teach them this. np. I was one of the posters there arguing against using it, but only because I think it's a bad program for any age. If your ds is interested in learning to read I don't see why you shouldn't try to help him. But there are better programs. Explode the Code is good and used by a lot of schools. There are fun web sites, like Starfall, though that might be too young for some 5 or 6 yos. But check it out in case. There are computer programs, like Reader Rabbit and Leapster games. Talk to his teachers abd see what they say. [ Reply | More ]

How did you teach your 3.5 yo to read? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.02.08, 02:50 PM Flag

NP -- my dd was reading pretty well at 3.5 too. she was always into letters and how to spell (which is amusing in retrospect, because at 7 years old, she is not what i would call a great speller; she is however an excellent writer). she could identify all the uppercase letters by just over a year -- it was pretty amazing. so we didn't really teach her to read -- she would ask tons of questions about letter sounds and what signs said and how to spell certain words. it kind of just all came together for her gradually. but she was very, very young when she started asking questions (she talked really young too), so the "learning" process took about a year. no instruction per se -- just interest and obvious aptitude.
