Phil and Ted Sport, Vibe or Dash might be good options as can be used for newborn and toddler and as a single stroller for either too. [ Reply | More ]

Don't bother with a double stroller for a 4 y/o. If you really think she's going to be too tired to walk sometimes, get a buggy board for a single stroller. A double stroller will be a waste of money. [ Reply | More ]

It depends on the situation - at a place like the Bronx Zoo or Disney it makes sense, but on a day-to-day basis they usually aren't necessary. We live in Manhattan, and other than the Bronx Zoo, 4 y/o DD hasn't used her stroller in about 6 months. We do take the bus more than we did when she used the stroller regularly, though (it's easy for me to walk 20 or 30 blocks pushing the stroller, not so easy for me to muster the patience it takes for DD to walk that far). But how can a baby's ability to digest change overnight (i.e., on 1 yr bday)? It must be gradual, right? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.02.08, 02:03 PM Flag
»
You can either digest or not digest something (there is a threshold in there somewhere). I think the 1 year rule is just statistics - like 95% of babies can digest milk by then. Your ped knows your baby, and I'm guessing by 10 months like 50% of babies can do it. If your baby isn't one of them, since you are gradually introducing it, no real harm done. [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't change overnight -- it's just that their brains and eyeballs are different at age 1 than earlier. The enzymes in formula help develop healthy eyes and brains. [ Reply | More ]

nnp: (Well, I just posted below.) I would argue that the person telling their kid to ask for a turn, in your situations, is interjecting in your parenting. Unless it has been some extreme amount of time (which was never established) telling your kid to ask my kid to get off is akin to saying, "I don't think you are going to monitor your kid and get off in a a reasonable amount of time." That is where I draw the line. (Not like I actually care but it is UB so I'll play along.) [ Reply | More ]

Some kids never get off. My dd is old enough that she goes to swings alone, and in the 6+ set there are plenty of kids that will happily swing for half hour or more with plenty of other kids waiting. If you don't teach your kid to ask they'll never get a turn. [ Reply | More ]

OK. I feel like the example just changed. The two posts I was replying to both talked about parents/caregivers on hand and actively involved. If that is not the case then the answer changes. If my 5 yo kid is alone in the park and hogging the swing -- you have every right to direct your kid to ask him for a turn. [ Reply | More ]

Because for my kid (and most kids of his age group I think) if you (the litle girl in the OP) ask him to share either he shares or he doesn't. And if he doesn't get off right away he will feel like he hasn't shared well. But if he swings while you wait quietly then I say, "ok, your turn is up." He gets off, probably smiles at her as he walks away and feels good about having shared. [ Reply | More ]

that's why parents should be monitoring their kids, to prompt them in how to react to situations. imo, the asker's mom was doing her job by prompting her dd to ask for a turn. i teach my kids that when someone asks for a turn, they should finish up their turn and give the next person a turn. if no one is waiting, they can play indefinitely. if someone is waiting, there's a limit. i think it's a healthy lesson and i'm surprised the kid's mom would be considered overbearing. Fair enough. Maybe it is about where one swings. For the swings my kids use it is obvious if someone is waiting or not. So there is no question about this. (I'm glad I waited out the swing debate. It seems like we have two differing viewpoints held by equally rational parents.) [ Reply | More ]
