Ped said it is ok to give DB milk at 10mo (introduce gradually) until DB weaned. Anyone btdt? Would really like to avoid formula. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My ped said none until after 12 months (something to do with enzymes). But I would listen to your own ped, I really don't think your ped would jeopardize your baby's health. [ Reply | More ]

But how can a baby's ability to digest change overnight (i.e., on 1 yr bday)? It must be gradual, right? [ Reply | More ]

You can either digest or not digest something (there is a threshold in there somewhere). I think the 1 year rule is just statistics - like 95% of babies can digest milk by then. Your ped knows your baby, and I'm guessing by 10 months like 50% of babies can do it. If your baby isn't one of them, since you are gradually introducing it, no real harm done. [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't change overnight -- it's just that their brains and eyeballs are different at age 1 than earlier. The enzymes in formula help develop healthy eyes and brains. [ Reply | More ]

Whatever. Just try it. Formula is fine too. Not sure why you're so opposed to it [ Reply | More ]

op: I can't explain it. Rationally I know it's fine but I figure DB has gone this long w/o it, would rather continue to do so [ Reply | More ]

The protein, and especially iron, structure is different. Formula tries to mimic breastment. Milk absolutely does not. That said, follow the doc's orders. I've never heard that advice. [ Reply | More ]

I did exactly this on pediatrician's recommendation for the same reasons. No problems at all. [ Reply | More ]
