[ - ] what are OLSATS, ERBs? When do kids take them? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know because we went public route, no G&T....you can do a search, but I think erb is for private, olsat is for G&T, then there's another one for Hunter/Anderson. kids take them when they're 4...but like I said you don't have to bother with any of it if you're planning on public and not trying for a G&T program [ Reply | More ]

Anderson is a G&T school, so you need to take the OLSAT and score 97% or above to qualify (realistically, you need a 99% to qualify, at least this year). Hunter is open to the public, but run by Hunter College and they use a different test, the Stanford-Binet. The ERBs are for privates. [ Reply | More ]

sb is a classic IQ test. OLSAT is also an aptitude test, not exactly IQ, but loosely considered that. it is given to all public school students in some grades in many states, CT included. the scores people are discussing(97, 99) are the percentiles, not actual scores. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry for the delay. January is good because you apply in the same year for public and private schools. Public schools use the calendar year and private schools have an official Sept 1 cutoff, so when you do you are the oldest for public and have a good month for privates. If you are looking at public gifted, you do whatever the instructions are thtat year, they have changed every year for the past few years. Hunter will post on its website, but you request an application over the summer, submit it in the fall and dc takes the Stanford Binet test with a Hunter designated psychologist. For private schools, you need to take the ERB. The erb testing season is April through January and the test can be taken at dc's preschool or at the testing office. You start looking at private schools in the spring or fall of the year before you want to attend. So for January 07, your child would be entering K in Sept. 12, and you could begin ERB/tours in Spring 11. Your child could start preschool in Sept. 10, you call the day after labor day to request applications. That would be done in sept. 09. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Need advice. Things weren't working out with nanny -- not one big thing, just lots of little things -- so we decided to fire her. We handled it in a way so as not to get her all upset, just told her our circumstances had changed. She's using us as a reference. I don't want to screw her, but we were not that happy with her. How would you/have you handled? 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If you cannot be a good, positive reference, then you should do your ex-nanny the courtesy of NOT being a reference (eg., tell her your not comfortable). You may not have liked her, but if you give her a bad reference you are directly impacting her ability to earn a livelihood, which in my opinion is really, really wrong. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] While we all wait, let us just be thankful for our NYC options and that we're not in West Virginia: Letter to the Editor, NYT: Before I retired, I was a full-time math teacher. With the full knowledge and dismay of state and county school officials, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union, I demonstrated to my students that mathematics, using statistics, probability and number magnitude, proves beyond the shadow of doubt that evolution is nonsense. The students saw that the evidence clearly shows that every item associated with humans, animals and plants are intelligent designs, and that intelligent design is science. I always let the students figure it out for themselves and allowed them to believe what they chose, but at least they were exposed to the scientific facts, which evolutionary extremists want to censor from the minds of public-school students. The school has, for 90-odd years, adhered to the tenets of its founder Caroline Pratt (google her and her book "I Learn From Children") who was one of the early proponents of experiential, social-studies based education. The school uses the same materials in the same way as it did back when it began, the Jobs program and the Block program are central to the curriculum in each grade which emphasizes learning by doing, communal progress, individual research to solve problems -- there are no grades, just individual progress reports. East Deck is the favorite, old school motel right on the point but does sometimes get a bit NoLita in August. It's where the surfers paddle early and late and there's a small kitchenette in the room. The owners are great and the architecture is classic low-level surf motel- right on the water. NOT Fancy but clean and beachful. [ Reply | More ]
