Need advice. Things weren't working out with nanny -- not one big thing, just lots of little things -- so we decided to fire her. We handled it in a way so as not to get her all upset, just told her our circumstances had changed. She's using us as a reference. I don't want to screw her, but we were not that happy with her. How would you/have you handled? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

be honest if someone calls you for a reference - you'd want others to do so [ Reply | More ]

NP: It's not very mature to fire someone without telling them why, though [ Reply | More ]

IME, no one REALLY wants hear what they do wrong. It would just make her defensive and pissed off. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe, but she might have the option of not using you a reference then. [ Reply | More ]

She doesn't have a choice. She only has had 2 nannying jobs. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure she would rather not use you as a reference if you're going to give her a bad one! [ Reply | More ]

But you need to let her know what you'll be saying if there are criticisms [ Reply | More ]

tell her you are not comfortable being a reference. it's scarier to think about than to just say. [ Reply | More ]

If you cannot be a good, positive reference, then you should do your ex-nanny the courtesy of NOT being a reference (eg., tell her your not comfortable). You may not have liked her, but if you give her a bad reference you are directly impacting her ability to earn a livelihood, which in my opinion is really, really wrong. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. Either avoid the fight and give her a good reference, or be honest with her and tell her no. [ Reply | More ]
