I can't wait to pick my DD up from pre-school everyday but I'm so tired frm work that when we get home I let her watch TV for a whole hour so I can read, catch up with the mail, etc? it doesn't make you a horrible mom, but it's not great, either, and you obviously know it. You have time to yourself after she's sleeping; and tv isn't going to make her any more self-sufficient or able to amuse herself (quite the opposite). Try paring down to doing it only 2 days a week, then 1, then none. You won't regret it. [ Reply | More ]

np: Oh, come off it. My DH was a latchkey kid from age 5, watched hours of TV every day. He also went to an Ivy League school and is a novelist and screenwriter now. One hour of TV a day isn't going to harm OP's kid. Why not focus on the more important thing - that the mother and child spend some quality time together? [ Reply | More ]

how do you know dh isn't so fabulous despite his massive tv intake, not because of it? This is akin to arguing that smoking during pregnancy must be healthy or at least benign because my mother smoked 2 packs a day while pg with me and I'm fine. [ Reply | More ]

Look, DH and I don't let our kids watch 6-7 hours of TV a day (though DH would argue that all that TV taught him about story structure, dialogue and sparked his imagination). But your response is ridiculous - OP isn't letting her child watch hours of TV on end. [ Reply | More ]

right. The fact that you consider it "ridiculous" to think of daily tv as a negative is exactly my point. TV is not a part of our daily lives; that was a deliberate choice. Why would OP ask the question if she wasn't at least slightly uncomfortable with it either? She asked. I gave my opinion. [ Reply | More ]

Your dd might like some "quiet time" to decompress herself - look at books, play in her room alone, color, etc. Knowing that you'll be there in an hour to have fun is great incentive for her to enjoy the time alone. We have two opinions from pediatric dentists: 1) put in a spacer, but it involves minor surgery and some risk of infection or they get knocked out (and therefore a choking hazard) or 2) leave the space, but she will likely need braces later and possibly speech therapy for a lisp (due to tongue thrust). 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Well, we have a toddler with tongue thrust issues, and he will need to have a rake installed at age 6 and braces with headgear starting the following year. He has all his teeth, so it's not an exact comparison - but the orthodontia protocol sounds nightmarish. [ Reply | More ]

my nephew is 3 and he had to have his two front teeth pulled (he fell, they were pushed up and in his gums, twisted). The ped. dentist told them to have false teeth put in. Maybe because he is older? I know tooth alignment was an issue as was speech. He just had them pulled last week and had the mold done. New teeth are being put in next week. I wonder if because he is older it was almost no choice for them? (less choking hazard maybe) [ Reply | More ]

Just came back from staying in Sebago Cabins in Harriman State Park. Cheap and cheerful, bring your own bedding and food. The kids LOVED it, and so did we. We saw deer, frogs, raccoons, a two foot turtle (it's on Sebago Lake), swam with fishes around our legs, went to yard sales nearby, barbecued each night, and sat around the campfire. Each cabin has it's own firepit and barbecue. We're going back every year until they outgrow it. In the spring you can book a two night stay, summer a week only (which would be too long anyway). I was just posting that we missed the date (ours was a handmade-only gift) because DS was out sick - and I just got a bitchy voicemail lecturing me about not showing my gratitude to the teacher. I used to be a class mom, NFW did I ever speak to someone that way. [ Reply | More ]

Giev me a break, I have lots of friends who are teachers and in no way do they ever keep the gifts, imagine how many they would have by the end of ther teaching career. [ Reply | More ]

Of course. But I'm fine with the gesture. But don't give us a drop-dead date and then get pissed because my kid happened to be out with scarlett fever. I'm waiting for my phone call back from her, it should be precious. [ Reply | More ]

I am amazed that someone thinks its ok to be bitchy and "teach someone else about manners". Funniest thing... [ Reply | More ]

No one, and I mean no one tells me that I have to hand make a gift for anyone. Gift giving isn't dictated like that. At least not in my life. [ Reply | More ]

I can imagine the teacher would have preferred $100 gc to Barnes & Noble or something instead. But class mothers can be the worst, there was one on here earlier complaining about people not giving $20 and that "she knows who the poor people are, and they aren't them." [ Reply | More ]

Oh, I know. And I gave her what for as well. I am grateful for the class moms who collect money. Just do it with a little grace. [ Reply | More ]

Hijack - dc's elementary school teacher this year is awful and nobody is collecting for an end of the year class gift. I don't like the teacher either but feel guilty - WWYD? [ Reply | More ]

Even the class mom did nothing? That's harsh. But if she is really that bad, maybe she needs a wakeup call. [ Reply | More ]

sigh, np. We should just do away with all this. When I was in school, they did not give teachers presents. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, students did. My Mom was a teacher when I was growing up and every year, she came home with a load of gifts from the kids. Most was junk, but she appreciated the thought. [ Reply | More ]

right, some children gave a gift they made or bought with their own money to the teacher. Not a bunch of crazed moms harrasing people for money. Totally different. [ Reply | More ]

Yes but the specials teachers are going to get left out too. Ugh. Don't have the time and energy to motivate to fix this - maybe we should just do individual gifts? [ Reply | More ]

wow, what school is this? I can't imaging someone hounding for gift money for the teachers at our school. People totally understand that not everyone is in the same financial position. Those that can give a little extra and those that can't give zero. [ Reply | More ]
