Am I a horrible Mom? I can't wait to pick my DD up from pre-school everyday but I'm so tired frm work that when we get home I let her watch TV for a whole hour so I can read, catch up with the mail, etc? I feel bad about it but I just get crabby without that time to myself. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

it doesn't make you a horrible mom, but it's not great, either, and you obviously know it. You have time to yourself after she's sleeping; and tv isn't going to make her any more self-sufficient or able to amuse herself (quite the opposite). Try paring down to doing it only 2 days a week, then 1, then none. You won't regret it. [ Reply | More ]

unreal. it's perfectly fine for both of them to unwind for a while. [ Reply | More ]

nah. An hour of tv every day after school is not fine. Socially acceptable maybe--so is being obese, so is being sedentary, so is being stupid. All things that people who do nothing but watch tv are. [ Reply | More ]

np: Oh, come off it. My DH was a latchkey kid from age 5, watched hours of TV every day. He also went to an Ivy League school and is a novelist and screenwriter now. One hour of TV a day isn't going to harm OP's kid. Why not focus on the more important thing - that the mother and child spend some quality time together? [ Reply | More ]

how do you know dh isn't so fabulous despite his massive tv intake, not because of it? This is akin to arguing that smoking during pregnancy must be healthy or at least benign because my mother smoked 2 packs a day while pg with me and I'm fine. [ Reply | More ]

Look, DH and I don't let our kids watch 6-7 hours of TV a day (though DH would argue that all that TV taught him about story structure, dialogue and sparked his imagination). But your response is ridiculous - OP isn't letting her child watch hours of TV on end. [ Reply | More ]

right. The fact that you consider it "ridiculous" to think of daily tv as a negative is exactly my point. TV is not a part of our daily lives; that was a deliberate choice. Why would OP ask the question if she wasn't at least slightly uncomfortable with it either? She asked. I gave my opinion. [ Reply | More ]

I think she was more concerned of the time she was missing with her daughter. You are the one focusing on the TV. [ Reply | More ]

what's so sad is that they can only "unwind" in front of the tv. Kids can learn LOTS of other ways to unwind, I promise! [ Reply | More ]

horrible mothers allow men to have sex with their dc in exchange for drugs, don't feed their dc, burn them with cigarettes. Perspective. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks to the mom who just put this in perspective for me. I was abused as a kid and you're so right. Obviously I must be doing something right because my dd is a great little person and doing great academically. Thanks again! It's hard to admit that I'm just human sometimes. [ Reply | More ]

our tv goes on on weekends only. Once you set some boundaries, it's easy to limit the tv that you're not comfortable with. [ Reply | More ]

Stop pouting. You don't have to be anywhere near perfect to decide that television is not going to be a part of your kids' daily life. [ Reply | More ]

Your dd might like some "quiet time" to decompress herself - look at books, play in her room alone, color, etc. Knowing that you'll be there in an hour to have fun is great incentive for her to enjoy the time alone. My dd has had quiet time every day since giving up her afternoon nap, and almost every day she enjoys it very much. [ Reply | More ]

my only problem with this is that it's setting up a dependancy for tv to be her relaxing thing. [ Reply | More ]
