we Democrats screw stuff up and Republicans are sneaky and clever and have "branded" themselves perfectly for the sad state we live in today being that most Americans don't read a paper or understand world events... I am not disparaging people who read and are "present" and vote Republican (although I don't get it) but I mean that the Republican message as it's been constructed appeals to people the masses... this will still be a hard election for Democrats [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] WWYD? We bought and moved into our home nearly 2 years ago. We still get mail for several of the former residents; it got down to mostly junk, but there were a couple of more important-looking pieces. Every once in a while, someone comes by and picks up the mail we'd set aside, apologizing for all the trouble, etc. Last time, I told them we weren't keeping it anymore, that it had been plenty of time for everyone to call the DMV, etc, and that I wasn't comfortable with anyone using this address who doesn't live here (and pay me rent). Today there are two final DMV notices, addressed to this guy's wife, probably relating to some old unpaid moving violations. Do we let the car get impounded/license revoked? We warned them for months to change her DMV address, and frankly, what kind of idiot needs someone to tell them to do that? 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes it is. And it NYC, it is somelthing that must be done. The parents would not send their dc to their zoned public. well, in other school systems around the country, G&T programs are housed within the same school, so parents do not have to uproot their kids from a school to obtain gifted education. this could only work if there were a G&T program in each school. obviously not a possibility here. to say that it is a way for whites to avoid non-whites is out of line. you really don't understand the special challenges of the NYC public school system [ Reply | More ]

wouldnot be feasible for nyc to put G&T programs in every school. as it stands, they go underutilized in areas with few kids who test at gifted levels. would make no sense here. if I live in a small town in Iowa, there may be only one school in the whole town, or two. much easier to form a program within the school. Curious what district you're in; reasons for unfilled seats are many. I fear you're believing the hype from the DoE and other unreliable sources proclaiming the lack of eligible kids. D6 closed a g&t program for the coming school year, where the (one!) K g&t class was over 20 kid. District g&t is not subject to any uniform standard. A g&t classroom in d2,3,6 or any other will be as different as night and day. My own experience with a d6 g&t classroom was incredibly sad. Last Sept, a vibrant, excited group of families and kids showed up for the first day of school. At least half of us were taken aback to hear, for the very first time, that this would be a dual immersion, Spanish/English class. That said, we all tried to adjust our mindsets and move hopefully ahead. The classroom itself was not the classroom we'd toured the previous winter-that one had been reassigned as a prek class. There were no manipulatives, no nothing really, except several tables, each with a can of riotously sharpened #2 pencils in the center. Our childrens' teacher wasn't a g&t teacher; she was an esl and dual language instructor. She was very nice and lacked language richness in English. It was quite evident the DoE decided to form some kind of esl class for kids whom scored above the cutoff. The diversity of the group was lovely, the kids bright; all the kids from Spanish speaking homes were positively, already fluent in both languages. My kid couldn't take any more- after 3 weeks of instruction on sitting up straight with feet on the floor(really) in alternating languages(both of which she understands)-and neither would we. That crap would not float in some nearby districts but this is not isolated to D6. Where are you? [ Reply | More ]

I am in D3. I would be happy to see a gifted program in every school, but I do not think it would work change the fact that there would be a huge disparity among programs since good programs, gen ed or G&T, are funded by MC parents. unfortunately the NYC govt does not want to pay to have what every school system in the country has. art, gym, foreign language, adeqaute programming are thought to be some sort of unnecessary or over the top accoutrement, instead of part of education. the only reason the G&T schools are good is because there is a sufficient number of MC parents who bring in their own money and efforts to improve the school. does not happen in low income areas with uneducated parents. so it isn't that the DOE is spending extra money for the G&T kids...in fact, its less. but there parents are spending the money. no resources coming from your pocket. My feeling is the DOE should increase spending to all schools. burns me to pay for my dc to get extras like art, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not worried about the money coming from my pocket - I'm worried about all the kids who don't have involved parents basically being thrown away in this system. We are lucky to be in a good zoned school, so the G&T placement didn't matter. If I were in a crappy zone, of course I would have taken advantage of his score - to get him out of a bad school, not because I think he needs a specialized education. [ Reply | More ]

again, the fact that your dc is not gifted means nothing in terms of whether other kids who get high scores are gifted. many of them are. that MC people have to pay for basics and poor people cannot is exactly the same problem. this city does not pay to educate its children in a decent fashion. taking exception to G&T programs does nothing to change this basic fact [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Planning to move out of Brooklyn after 10 yrs; had been set on Garrison, but just found a great house in Somers. I like the country feeling in the Somers/North Salem area, but imagine it won't have the same 'artsy' environment as Garrison/Cold Spring/Beacon...(we're an artist & a writer). Anyone live up there or know it well? Somers schools are supposed to be good, yes? Also worry that the commute will be lethal, but that's the trade-off for good space for good $$, I suppose... Any thoughts appreciated! 22 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Not entirely helpful, but friends of ours love Cold Spring. Maybe something good will come up in one of your top towns soon? [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, I'm thinking maybe we should wait... But the Somers house is really perfect, and walking distance to the train! Ah, but Cold Spring... so nice. Do your friends have kids in the Haldane schools? [ Reply | More ]

The DH commutes every day, DW twice a week. Easy commute they say (they live within walking distance to the train). We took the train to see them once before we got a car - easy! [ Reply | More ]

True. I'm sure the commute would get tiring. I'm thinking freelancing would be ideal, or else finding a job locally... Scary to leave the city, though, no matter how "ready" we think we are! [ Reply | More ]

We just did it. DH goes in 3 days a week. Love our new town and the new house - much less scary in reality than in our heads. [ Reply | More ]

OP here: Happy to hear it's not as scary in reality...and the 3-day/week commute sounds very do-able. Maybe we can swing that, too. Where did you move, if I may ask? [ Reply | More ]

Lake Mohawk in Sparta, NJ. House on the lake, tons of room, getting a boat. 1 1/2 hour commute for DH. [ Reply | More ]

We looked in the area you are looking in, couldn't afford the space we wanted. Also looked up in Hudson River Valley. Could find the space, but commuting was out of the question. This is a good balance for us. Though not the same arty crowd, it's a mixture of all sorts of people. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, it's a funny little throwback of a community. Kids can do sailing club or waterskiing club, there are a ton of lake beaches, it's 20 minutes to skiing, and there a lots of organic farms nearby. But, of course, it's sandwiched between farmland and McMansion towns. Hope you find exactly what you are looking for - and soon. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like you found the sweet spot btwn the farms & McMansions... Is it 1.5 hrs on transport, or door-to-door? Too far for a daily commute? In any case, I love hearing a success story. Thanks again for the encouraging words... [ Reply | More ]

Door-to-door. We are 5 minutes from bus stop, DH's work is 5 minute walk from Port Authority. It would be an untenable commute if he worked downtown. [ Reply | More ]

Ours in NYC were really nice too - I was one of them! She made a drop-dead date for DS to submit something for teacher's gift. DS was home sick with scarlett fever and missed the date, I thought (because she said so) we couldn't deliver it late. And now comes a message about how DS is the only child who didn't contribute and don't we want Mrs. X to know how much we appreciate her and on and on. [ Reply | More ]

No idea why she was like this. I can't have pissed her off before, we've only been here for 6 weeks. And now the little one looks like he has strep too, and I'm being tested for rheumatic fever (been having awful joint pain and fevers, turns out untreated strep can turn into this in adults - other choice is lyme disease, of course). I needed her message like a hole in the head today. [ Reply | More ]

He's actually fine now, thanks. Antibiotics are really amazing. He's been back at school for two days, but she said VERY CLEARLY in her note she couldn't take the stuff late. Thank you so much for letting me vent, it's just been the crappiest week. My younger child was a preemie and has mild immunosuppression, so we are doubly worried about him, and this woman I guess just hit my last nerve. I had to stop DH from leaving a nasty message back to her, kind of wish I let him! [ Reply | More ]
