There were a couple of Dads -who just couldn't even get a word in. It was profoundly shocking the things they were worried about. look all the kids will be 99s and whether you are at one or the other is just a matter of luck since it is by lottery. also, delta is a much better MS than anderson, with a longer history, better facilities more science labs, etc. also bigger, so a chance to meet an expanded group of kids (beyond the 50 you know since K), and the kids in the school will all be from D3 which is a plus in terms of community and socializing. Delta's definitely not a better middle school. Because it's larger its population has a much broader range of ability and skill. Because it's bigger, they have a harder time with consistency in teaching. They're also not as accellerated as Anderson's middle school. They have the same base science program (they just have tables with sinks) for 6&7, but Anderson has the Bio Regents class for 8th grade and Delta has Earth Science which doesn't give kids the HS credit. Delta has the same limited access to auditorium, gym, etc. as Anderson because it also shares building with other programs/school. Some kids learn much better socializing staying in small environment at this point in their adolescence and are more ready to be in the larger group in HS. That's about finding the right match. Anderson has better exmissions by % to specialized HS and has a higher rate of kids getting their 1st/2nd choices. [ Reply | More ]

Socially, it's a choice that's personal, but the point was that Delta isn't necessarily a better school. Certainly now without Fred there and most of his star teachers retired. Top half of Delta kids will do great in the academic careers. 90% of AMS kids will, too. [ Reply | More ]

In defense of Anderon's current graduating class of 58 kids: 17 to Stuyvesant, 11 to Bronx Science, 6 to LaGuardia, 6 to American Studies at Lehman, 2 to City College HS of Math Science and Engineering, 3 to Brooklyn Tech, 4 to Beacon, 3 to Bard. 1 to Dalton, 2 to Trinity, 1 to Chapin, 1 to Hotchkiss and 1 to Spence. if you are talking baout doe free bus service, there are "official guidelines." Very generally, you school must support the bus service and have at least 11 elgible children who wish to ride. Distances (of the closest possibel riders) vary by grade (ie K kids can qualify failry close, but 5th graders need to be further away to ride. I know of 1st grader about 10 blocks away who qualify..Also, the bus route cna not be more than 5 miles long. These are my recollections and may be a little off. You can call dc's school and get info. [ Reply | More ]

Do you realize that the DOE has internal staff who make deliveries all the time AND they use summer interns (unpaid) to do all kinds of jobs like this? It could be in conjunction with another city agency jobs program. This isn't about G&T draining resources. There are many, many ways the DOE drains resources from schools, but delivering letters today by hand so parents have a week to decide instead of 3 days if they went via mail - just isn't a money drain on the education system.
