[ - ] Can i just share this??!! I dated a guy who told me he was seperated but really was not 8 years ago for about 3 weeks. We ended things and it got messy as he was pissed. Since then i stopped all contact, He divorced then married another aquaintance friend of mine. Tried to get in contact with me a few times in the last few years by email/chat and i found him suspect given his track record. Guess where i see him and his wife for the first time in 8 years? A 2 year old birthday party...half way across the world from where we knew each other!! Crazy! His wife made a point to come over and say high to me and then another point to make sure i met him him. He couldn't get out of the conversation fast enough. Oh and the other thing...his wife is 5 months pregnant and HUGE HUGE...and i'm 3 months PP and hide the last 15 lb well! 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

[ - ] Anyone on at this hour in NY willing to talk schools? Really conflicted between 166G&T (now really reconsidering the racial segregation) and MSC. Those are our two choices. Prefer peer group and academic rigor of 166, but hate the segregation and liked the overall school feel at MSC but worry about the academics and it being maybe too unstructured for my DC... 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I know smart, caring people who love both schools. But the ones at MSC worry about academics and the ones at 166 do not. My dc applied to high school this year...many kids we know from 166 (my dc attended another UWS public) are headed to Specialized HS's, after spending middle school at Delta. And now that Delta's admissions test really counts (it used to be a formality) and the city is putting it's fingers into Middle School admissions, I'd go with 166. The better investment for the long haul. Work to improve what you don't like about the school...it'll be possible because you won't be running your kid around for extra academic enrichment. How does the BOE justify spending more money on your child at the expense of the other 98% of kids in NYC? You all sound like greedy hags. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

First, many people don't coach their kids. Second, the DOE does not spend more money for G&T programs. In fact, they spend less money. But those schools *are* better because of money - the parents' own money. [ Reply | More ]

Per pupil budget allocations are made based on a myriad of factors, the biggest ones being socio economic. The free lunch figures are used to determine which schools will get additional city, state and federal funding. School performance is also a factor. Schools with economically disadvantaged kids have far more money per pupil than schools with kids who do not qualify for free lunch and who are academically successful. There is no extra given either per pupil or in any other way to G&T schools, indeed it's often less. [ Reply | More ]

op: I am just saying that this whole process, starting almost 10 months ago when dc was just barely 4 yo, has been a long process. We did not try for privates so we did get to avoid all the application requests, ERB, private tours and interviews, etc. But dc did take SB, do the Hunter thing (#12 on w/l there), Dh and I went on many many public school tours and open houses, I went to many public school hearings and town hall meetings. DC took OLSAT. Entered and shut out of D3 lottery- which btw, I still have not recieved lottery # in the mail, just a letter saying we did not get a seat). Waiting for results and waiting for placement after many delays. it was tough. i am NOT saying that others didn;t have to go thru this mess (and some even worse). I am just extremely happy and grateful that my dc has the opportunity to go to Anderson. I wish there were enough seats for all of the dc who should be going there. [ Reply | More ]

After reading these posts I said to my kindergartner, who is at Nest now, "I hope you understand how lucky you are to be going to your school. So many kids (or families of those kids) would do anything for your spot. I sympathize with all of you going through this. Although this is nothing compared to going through terminal illnes or the like, when you are a middle class person who can't afford private and live in an area where the schools suck, Citywide G&T is your only option. I put all my eggs in Nest last year (no pun intended) and was lucky enough that my DC got in. Until I received my notification I was a wreck. If dc didn't get in, I would have considered moving to Jersey or Long Island just for the schools. Thank God I didn't have to do that!!!! [ Reply | More ]

While she is smart, its her mother's tenacity and resourcefulness that helped to make the Nest thing happen for her. My ability to stay informed and meet deadlines made the difference. She just went in and sealed the deal when she scored high on that OLSAT test and performed well on her onsite assessment (last year admissions). Not necessarily. The numbers you'd expect to find in a given population, based on the normal distribution chart of IQ scores, is hypothetical. But when researchers have done studies by testing actual populations they have had to acknowledge that they find more people in the upper ranges than should be there. For instance, look at http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/private_pg.htm and scroll down to the quote from Halbert Robinson's study. And I know there have been others since that one where they've found the same phenomenon. [ Reply | More ]

every kid in the 97+ range is equally qualified for a spot at a citywide. As long as the sib is in that range I have absolutely no problems with him to get priority. There is a certain element of quality of life to it. It is a good thing that elementary school aged sibs go to school together, especially for logistical reasons. [ Reply | More ]

I find that so sad. This is the first year NO onsites, so your DC might not have made it iin with the high 99. Statistically, Anderson accepted the lower scoring Stanford Binet percentiles, and the OLSAT is no comparison to that test. 'free pass' pathetic! [ Reply | More ]

I emailed her this morning. Nothing set in stone yet, but tentative dates are June 23 or June 25. They had been planning to do it this week, but can't because parents have until Friday to make their decision. She said they would decide on the orientation date today or tomorrow. [ Reply | More ]

Tentative plan: DH takes him in every day "on the way" to work and picks him up two days from after school program. I will pick him up the other three days at regular time. Of course, we could also consider a "train-pool". Will you be at orientation? [ Reply | More ]
